Everyone has slightly different preferences and there's no "right" answer as such, but generally speaking, I would say that either a 205 1.6 GTi gearbox or a 405 1.9 Mi16 (or 306 S16 and Xsara VTS - very similar ratios) are the best compromise for a daily driven 205 Mi16 in terms of acceleration, cruising revs/noise and, for what it's worth, top speed*

It's been discussed at length many times before, so if you do a search you'll find lots of posts on the subject, and the exact gearing / differences between the various gearbox choices.

* - less of an consideration in my opinion, seeing as just about any gearbox will easily pull well into license losing speeds in this country.

I'd stick with that then - certainly little point of going to the effort swapping that for a 1.6 GTi if there's nothing wrong with it IMO.

Roughly speaking, a 1.6 GTi 'box has closer spaced ratios than a 1.9 Mi16, with a shorter 4th and 5th meaning higher cruising revs for the same speed - it's approximately 5% shorter geared in 5th, so around 200rpm difference at 80mph.
