205 1.1 Fuelling Problem

Recommended Posts

hi all

my brother recently bought a 1989 205 xl and when he bought it it had half the engine striped down as apparently the head gasket had gone, we checked over the head and it seems fine not warped etc and cleaned up nice got the engine rebuilt and timing set etc etc then went to start it and it just keeps turning over and not firing,

we've done a comprettion test and everything seems fine and also its got spark and fuel is going to the carb but still nothing, we took the top of the carb off and the float bowl it full of fuel and there is nothing on the spark plus so we think fuel isnt geting ito the cylinders,

after having a proper look it looks like the carb has been stripped before and not put back together properly and the problem is i cant seem to find any diagrams on this carb or even any pictures so i was wondering if anyone on here has any pictures of it or diagrams?, its a solex as far as i know and the cars a 1.1 heres a picture of the engine

thanks

I cant see the pics as I'm at work, but I'd suggest grabbing a replacement carb from the scrappy/ebay and swapping it over to see if that cures the problem, they're pretty common and shouldnt cost much

may do that :)

is a citroen ax 1.1 carb the same as a 205 one?

quick question to all that have this carb, where does the water pipe go on the throttle body?, as theres a long pipe coming from the main hose which goes into one sideof the throttle body and a smaller one that comes out the other end and ive got this connected to the male bit in the middle of the manifold at the bottom, is this right?

heres a quick drawing to show what im on about

Have you got the leads on in the right order?

The carb should have an accelerator pump jet arrangement. If there is fuel in the float bowl you should be able to see (and hear) a jet of fuel being squirted down the throttle bore when you open the throttle quickly/manually turn the butterfly spindle. Obviously you need to have the inlet off of the top of the carb to check that it is working. The point is that this will be putting fuel in to the manifold even if the idle and main circuits are not working, and by cranking over it should be trying to run for short periods. If you are still getting nothing at all then re-try the sequence of the ignition leads.

I'm not sure what you mean about the coolant hoses. On a 1.4 (and most likely the 1.1 as the manifolds are very similar if not identical) there was a coolant hose that runs from the main hose down near the back of the block and into the male fitting on the manifold. There is no return - the manifold mates to the coolant ways in the head.

The only hoses going to the carb itself should be the fuel supply from the little swirl pot jobby that has the inlet from the pump and the return to the tank, and the small diameter vacuum hose that probabaly goes to a small diameter male fitting on the carb somewere below the main throttle butterfly. The other end of this hose should run to the vacuum diaphragm situated on the dizzy.

Some of the carbs were wired up with a small resistor to provide a bit of heat and prevent carb ice-up.

cheers mate :D

got it woring in the end turns out the ppe was in the right place as it comes from the main pipe into the throttle body then back out the trottle body to the manifold, i think it heats up the air on cold days or aids with starting

anyways here it is running for the first time :D
