2.1 Td Conversion

Recommended Posts

BackStreetRacecars

Hi, I am about to undertake a 2.1 td conversion into a 1.8d 205... was wondering if anyone else has done such a conversion and was looking for advice and part numbers for things like down pipes, gear cables from the c5 and so on...

thanks in advance

Hilgie is probably the man to pm or speak to. There is someone on here, who's name I can't remember [from Netherlands possibly], but he has a white 205 van, you know the funny looking ones with the tall tailgate who has a tuned 2.1td in the van. There should be a clip on you-tube of him against a civic type r on a drag stip.

Just found it there.

I believe you can use the standard exhaust manifold etc. on the 2.1 engine, and the gear cables, why not use the orginal setup there also (well if it doesn't collide with the manifold or turbo that is).

I did the 2.1 TD conversion to a 405 1.9 TD, and it more or less fitted straight into the bay.

ah cool... i guess crossing the bridges when I get to them is gonna be the way... what injection pump did the 2.1 engine you fitted have on it?

They usually come with Lucas EPIC (epic fail IMO) pumps. Make sure you Bosch it

The 1.9's are not far off from what i've heard, they rev higher but are less torquey than the 2.1.

A 2.5 TD conversion would be epic B)

The engine donor car was a 605 2.1 TD, so it actually already had the Bosch pump. I did wind up the diesel adjustment screw a bit, and I can tell you I think it will be a very fun engine in a 205 :)

dont listen to all the scare stories of lucus fail its a bit like saying 205s wont tickover without hunting!

you cant run them on veg oil and they not as easy to tune as the bosch pump but they can be tuned

as far as i know all 2.1s have the lucus pump

if you do fit the bosch you will also need the injectores and idealy the injection pipes

i have a 180000 mile 2.1 with the lucus pump and have had no fuel proplems just passed the mot and the smoke was well within the limits.

if it has a keypad with the engine running take the plug out of the back and its unlocked.

good luck with the build.

Not phase 1 605's afaik. :)

Btw. I have some build pics of my 405 here; http://s428.photobucket.com/albums/qq3/B1ackMi16/405TD/

Page 2-5 at least have quite some pics related to the 2.1 engine. (I even had the head ported on it :))

Afaik the water housing will not be a problem in a 205 bay. In the 405 bay however the rear housing water inlet was pointing straight into the subframe front leg, so I had to fabricate a new water housing. Apart from that most things fitted. Had to modify the strengtening bracket between turbo and block not to hit the ARB and some small issues like that, but nothing major.

The most time consuming was the IC piping I think. But of course, all small things adds up :)

so yeah this is a 2.1 out of an s plate 406, I have all the loom and the ecu, I'm not a stranger to modifying looms but slightly worried about coded key etc.... is the lucas pump on your one the same idea?

i think if it doesnt have the keypad you need the key ,ignition lock and ecu [might need unlocking but i dont know]

the lucus pump does have a immboliser on the back of it which is well protected by a steel plate.

Something to note, you will have to hammer the bulkhead so the turbo will fit behind there, unless you mount a bigger turbo on the gearbox, Im doing a 2.1 td conversion in my 306 and the turbo does cause problems clearing the bulkhead

Update..... got it in now. few issues..... its sitting squint in the engine bay...... also the shafts are very different.. will have to look into these problems before addressing other things, other than that the loom is mostly in place got the coolant pipes sorted out and the feed/return in place for fuel... I am planning on cutting a section out of the bulkhead and welding in a section to accommodate the turbo and downpipe....

Regarding different shafts.. Why not take gearbox from a 405 1.9 TD and keep the box a BE5 one?

I'm running it with the BE box in my 405 as I didn't want to start changing stuff to make it fit with the ME5 box.

I originally wanted to do this, what clutch would I use? the first motion shaft on the me5 box is considerably bigger...

Aha. As mine already was a 1.9 TD I just used the flywheel and clutch from that engine, and gearbox and all of it literally.

I have upped the boost some 1.2 bar, and put more diesel in. Still not a sign of slipping the 1.9 TD clutch.
