Cv Strech Boots!

Recommended Posts

MiniGibbo

Literally ten minutes ago i broke the second one ive tried to fit..

I put the cone on the shaft and spray it with wd40

Put the strech boot in boiling water for about 30 seconds

Then pull it on evenlly

Why then do they keep splitting in two, i just dont understand what im doing wrong. I even cut the cone's length down so it dosent have to go so big to get over the shaft and it still split.

The money ive spent so far i could of just paid a garage to fix it. i want to fix it my self please someone tell me where im failing :(

The one I used on the other half's fiesta was left in boiling water for longer than 30 seconds and went on ok.

Go to local motorfactor, if they are any good they will have one on the shelf that will suit.

Dizzee stuff

My experience of stretch boots is they dont last, 12 months and they need replacing again. just buy a good quality kit and do the job once.

agree with mark, decent boots and strip the shaft down if its a 1.6, 1.9' arent as involved due to a proper 6 ball cv that pops off easily

Not all 1900 shafts have the removeable CV. Some I have come across are one piece at that end like the 1600s.

Iv heard a few other brands dont last that long, who can say where the right place is to buy quality long lasting boots, or a good manufacturer ? When they brake they make a right mess im sure, does anyone know the price of Peugeot ones and if they are still available ?

Bit OT but avoid firstline cv boots like the plague!

And some have base-model style inner CV on the long shaft. (Such as the one in mark's link above.)

Mines a rallye so I'm assuming it'll have "base model" spec shafts?

Don't think it has the 106 shafts??

hard to say specifically as replacement stuff varies, they wont be too dissimilar to 106 shafts

its just as easy sometimes to replace the whole shaft. i fitted one of the stretchy boots, it lasted less than 24 hours and decided to split on the motorway in germany on the way to the ring

i drove the car for over 1000 miles with no grease in the cv, it only started whining/rumbling when i got about 10 miles from home. new shaft was less than £40 and a lot quicker to fit than messing about with cv boots.

Problem is that replacement driveshafts are a lottery as well - firstly whether you even get the correct shaft in the box, and secondly, whether the shaft is actually any good as the quality of the re-manufacturing varies significantly shall we say.

The later is especially true if you're running a plate type LSD as these are very sensitive to to worn or substandard CV joints and many recon shafts will knock and bang horrifically even brand new out of the box...

I've found stretchy ones are always split by the time you have the next mot :(

I bought a draper cone.

Talking to a guy on another forum last night he said it might be worth getting a whole new shaft as I suspect the inner boot is split too as the gearbox oil is leaking out of it on the little end before the clip.

I can't see a split but it has to be coming from somewhere. Be a good opitunity to replace the gearbox oil seeing as I'm changing every other fluid.

Where would you guys recommend buying a new shaft, I would normally vacant GSF or euros and don't fancy the risk of second hand..

Or would that be unwise, I've only got a oem 106 rallye gearbox not a fancy LSD box? The shafts fine apart from the split boot and the inner boot being full of gearbox oil :s

as an update

Just tried to get the shaft out, undone the two bolts on the engine mount then gave it a good pull followed by levering it where ever i could to no avail

Looks like the drain plug on the box is mullered too

you need to give it several good wallops with a punch and decent hammer if it hasn't been out and greased recently.
