Road/track Tyre Choices

Recommended Posts

locosaki

I've been having alook through some old threads for opinion on road/track tryes. I dont want to be paying 120 a corner for 888s as I will be lucky if the car see's 3 track days next year so I think that's over kill.

The Falken 912 seem to be popular but not so good on track !

Anyone got any pointers for me, I do realise there will be a compromise or would I be better getting another set of rims with dedicated track tryes and keeping my road tyres just for that, On the road.

Not another tyre thread!!

Definitely better poff with another set of wheels for track tyres, because tyres that are good for the road ie, lots of tread are crap for track-use. Just use your old road tyres that are on the wear bars for cheap track tyres.

Yep sorry to kick the arse out of this !!!

Don't really want to buy another set off rims so looking for a compromise here, I don't really use the car in the wet at all so I can take that out of the equasion !!

Someone reccomended T1rs to me for a decent hard wearing tyre that stands up well to track use aswell as dry road use, I'll do a little digging before I decide.

T1R's aren't that hardy under track conditions at all, especially when they still have plenty of tread!

If you want them to last as road tyres as well as take abuse on track you'll need something with large tread blocks (like Parada's) so the heat doesn't get to them so bad and start falling to bits or chamferring them badly. That said i've seen Parada's fall to pieces/de-laminate and the sidewalls are soft!

By the sounds of it I could be struggling here then.

I do have a set off 048s somewhere but they are on the wear barriers so of no use for the road (can you get away with regrooving these or is that a big no ?)

I did see Paradas pop up a few times when searching.

ive got R1R's they seem a good tyre between 888's and T1R's, £300 for 4 fitted. don't use the yoko prada's, they are total crap, i managed to wear the side wall down on a trackday as they are too soft.

Nothing to do with incorrect road geometry being used on track?

I've used Parada's before and they where fine.

With any tyre you have to drive to its capabilities, go beyond them and obviously they falter somewhat!

no the sidewalls really are that soft! I remember a picture of Anthony's 205 around Cadwell IIRC? almost rim to tarmac!

get a track that punishes a certain corner of the car and tyres like the Parada will die quite quickly regardless of the geometry.

I've got some 1.6mm PE2's to try soon :D

Close - me driving, but Baz's (formerly Bonzai's) 205.

As said, they're fine from a handling heat point of view, but the sidewalls are comically soft - by the end of that trackday we'd worn pretty much all the writing off the sidewalls to give you some idea.

So pradas is a no then,

I might end up sticking my worn 048s on my C5 rims, Wasn't really my plan as I would liked to have kept them on the car full time.

I don't think that's the worst pic either, but same car/day.

The tread was actually de-laminating from the carcass of the tyre too.

Yet saying that i've had Parada's which haven't in the past too!

I'm using a set of Toyo R1R tyres as well but only for sprinting. Dry grip is good but the wear rate for a trackday would be too fast for my liking.

Fair bit of flex on that tyre.

I dare say road tyres once there worn a bit would suffice for track but never going to be ideal.

As I said to you a few weeks back, I would leave the C5 wheels for track as I don't think there the nicest of wheels anyway and get a set of 1900 alloys for road use.

I really don't think the weight offset is something you will make use of on the road, Round the track with grippy tyres is a different ball game though.

Failing that your looking at 888s for the C5 wheels that would save you buying another set of wheels but seems a waste when you have worn 048s waiting to go.

i'm not to sure what you mean by using road geometry on track? are you saying everyone who uses their road car on a trackday should be adjusting things? i adjusted the tyre pressures every time i was going out to various psi's to try and stop the tyre wearing on the sidewalls, nothing i tryed helped. i also wore the writing off of the sidewall the same as anthony.

there was two other 205's on that particular trackday who had no problems with tyre wear, probably because they were not using parada's. just my opinion but i wont be using them again. still got them sat in the garage if anyone needs some tyres

It just Parada's as Wes says. They're diabolical, changing pressures doesn't help, well, until you go really high but then the loss of adhesion comes earlier and you'll get dreadfully un-even treadwear.

The Sorrento above was only running 205 running gear with no added camber. A little camber helps, but again, doesn't make a difference really, i've run them on others cars too!

Parada's, Biggest load of rubbish there, I got thru mine in around 15 minutes at Colone Airfield (At the back as well), Mind I did kill a 48R there too (Another day) but that took most of the day

What about some of the tyre used by the hillclimb / sprint guys on here?

I think Jamie (white_pugs) is using some stunners tyres that were within the rules & kept him in the same class (road going, not slicks) & work very well.

Not sure about longevity though, I'll point a couple of the lads who run at harewood in the direction of this thread.

IIRC they had a tread pattern very similar to Bridgestone RE720's which are good tyres imo.

AD08's seem popular at Combe AFAIK.

As Graham says, I used Stunners for 4 seasons of sprints/hills, a nice stable tire grip wise, relatively soft sidewalls but great value and would take some stick on a track day.

I moved to Yoko AD08s this season and to me they are the best list 1a tyre I have experienced, quick to heat up, REALLY consistent grip and a fantastic wall, turn-in is amazing, can carry great corner speeds than with the stunners, excellent all round, pricey mind at £75 per corner, also beware that the 195x50 15 is nearer a 205 section in reality, the 185/55 x15 (oem size) may be a better fit for standard gtis

Cheers

I've never heard of stunner tyres to be honest, I'll have a look and see what like.

Where would you reccomend for getting these.

Size wise what were you running, Am I better going 185/55/15 with these or stick with 195/50

£75 for an AD08 is damn cheap when you think R888's are around the £100 mark nowadays.

Yup, AD08's are somehow a 'road tyre' yes, they've caused a bit of confusion over that!
