remember my dad used to put a g clamp on the rail when we went away, maybe you could design a more permanent way of doing it,

Ive fitted a drop bolt to the bottom middle of the door, to make it a bit more secure.

What TT205 listed above is exactly what came to mind.

My only concern with such things though is you could argue that it advertises that you have something worth nicking in the garage...

Just a pointer,

My dad stores my Scimitar in a garage on a set of allotments/garage blocks ~80 garages. This is in a "rough" town.

The garage is nothing more than a wooden shack with wooden doors with a felted roof and a single window made of perspex.

On the plot, several of the chaps decided to build brick garages, some with alarms and fancy metal doors.

The Scimitar has sat up there for the last 23years, and (touch wood) the garage has never been broken in to, nor vandalised. The chaps that have the brick garages/new doors etc. are "hit" regularly (2-3 times per year). The moral for me is.....the more you spend on deterrants/security, the more someone is going to take an interest because they will be identifying it as holding things worth nicking.

My advice would therefore be - make it look as tatty as possible from the outside, whilst making it like fort Knox inside (i.e. hidden from view). Obviously IMO only!

I agree with both statements made above and to the second one I say, pick one which clamps to the garage door and fit it on the inside if you can get access to the garage from another entrance. That way it isn't showing to the world but is VERY effective.

If on the other hand you don't have another door to enter the garage (in all honesty, if you do this probably needs more security than the car entrance, as they are usually out of sight and once inside they can't normally be detected) I suggest floor lock, my uncle took my suggestion and has 2 either side of the garage; they never see the locks at the side, only in the middle.

I love security and I'd normally say more is better, but sometimes it can be a real inconvenience.

Also be mindfull that the metal on the door is good and strong, as a weak door is as usefull as a choclate fire guard no matter what lock. As an excample a few years a go my cat got locked in some ones garage and i just bent the metal back enough for the cat to get out .I just pushed it back into place after and no one ever knew !

Thats whats been stopping me from buying the 'Bulldog' door lock, that one looks the dogs bolluks & would be better in a matt black colour IMO.

Also if your garage door has the locking point in the middle at the top, then you could fit a L shape piece of steel to the top part, so no one can easily unclasp it open with force. The more you fit, the more time it takes to break in which is the key to help stopping them getting in.

2 dogs work well for me, also got a alarm on the door on the inside but thats becasue ive got a 2nd door leading into the garden/workshop.

the garage door does look like it will fall down if you try to open it tho

If you mount the bulldog on the inside (obviously a little higher than you would on the outside) then no one can tell you've got one installed and that you got anything worth nicking.

The other link I posted before which is a similar idea of bolting to the floor and the door works well too, especially if you've got no 2nd entrance to the garage.

Car theft is on the rise with the current climate and benefits being slashed; we should all be looking to beef up security on our more expensive items we own.

I knew someone who owned a nice rare lambo and rare ferrari who fitted anti ram bollards just behind the garage door so if anyone tried to ram raid the garage door they'd be in for a nasty surprise.

I have some nice long Rifle bolts in each corner of my lockup up and over door and a padlock and hasp at the bottom all on the inside I never use the actual locking part of the garage door itself so it’s just a latch essentially so if anybody tries the handle it will turn but they still can't get in.

I have also cross braced the door as it was quite flimsy.

Agree totally with Anthony on this one the garages up my lane that have the most visible security are the one's broken into mine has had 1 failed attempt (Whilst I was on holiday someone attempted to pull the door with something quite substantial luckily I had tied the 306 by its towing eye to the door)

The problem i have with that idea is that the front door is the only way to get in unfortunately :(

Ditto... Only way in and out is through the front, ive knocked up one of these at work:

Ive actually done two; would it be advertising too much if i fit them both?

If the only entrance is the main door or you don't like the idea of fitting an exterior floor brace internally, due to lack of access, then I can only suggest internal floor brace with external lock.

Just try to strengthen the main door internally so they can't pry through. Maybe also add strengthening plates around the locks above.

I have the two dead bolt style locks on that link above. Item 304.

They are fairly inconspicuous with the door shut and secure each corner of the door so it cant be bent up.
