Standard Inlet System

Ladies and Gents

I am new to the forum after being an observer for some time and thought it was time to get amongst the action.

I have been trawling the topics for an answer but to no avail, however I have managed to rectify most faults on my white 1.9 GTI "F "reg in the process so keep up the good advice.

The car in completley standard and has spent approx 5 years in the garage being resurected having been brought for a few hundred quid as a not runner having watched Wheeler Dealers. It is finally running having reconditioned the engine, brakes, shocks, rear beam and most of the wiring. It is now fully road legal and am at the stage of tinkering to get everything perfect.

Can anybody let me know whether this is correct;

I have the standard cylinder air filter and associated pipework that leads to the front slam panel. Once the front grille is fitted it appears that the black backing of the grille covers the plastic air inlet scoop on the slam panel. The car runs OK, still running the engine it so haven't thrashed it yet.

My questions are

Is this correct that the inlet is blocked?

Is there any benifit from drilling holes in the black portion of the grille to aid airflow.

I am a purist and intend to keep this setup and not swap it for an aftermarket filter / induction system.

Many thanks in advance.

Yes this is correct, the grille in standard guise has a slat that covers the inlet, this is fine as it doesn't actually 'block' it, but is probably more likely there to stop crap getting in.

You can chop it out as i do, i just don't see any reason for it, the filter does a good enough job and it doesn't look right being there. (You'd have to look hard or 'know' though tbh! :blush:)

Can just about see the difference left to right in this picture;

Also worth noting, similarly in this country there's usually a blank fitted behind the valance grille too, again as seen above, removed on my blue one.

No reason to cut it open, The pressure on the front edge of the bonnet is fine, cutting holes in it effects this to how much I have no idea as I'm not into aerodynamics'
