I've had numerous problem threads and hair pulling moments over the last few months with my trusty (to break down) 1600. First it showed the HG had gone, so did that along with cambelt kit etc, still no better, injectors refurbed, nothing. All the obvious stuff, no change - ditched all the injection and fitted some twin 40's and still the same problems!

Eventually cured it with some insanly thick HT leads (masking the problem, not fixing it) and it ran better but not well.

So I gave up and took it so an old school mechanic and 6 hours later, an earth lead ran to the (now remounted) coil and all problems go away... :(

I checked all the earth on the gearbox/wing but stupidly didn't think to check the terminal end of the cables, as these were hardly touching! So now I can put it into storage in the knowledge when I take it out again it should start, in theory!

My girlfriend had a similar problem to this recently, I fitted her a new clutch and obviously my grubby paws created a bad earth between starter and gearbox. She called the AA and they couldn't help and told her to take it to a garage, I went round the morning she had it booked in at the garage and all hell broke loose, because it was obviously my fault from fitting the clutch!

Scratched my head for 5 mins, found an old jump lead, cut the ends off and crimped on some ring terminals (luckily her dads a sparky so had loads of bits and bobs lying round) one end to battery, other to starter bolt. Fired first time!

Earth connections are an arse!
