Finding Parts For Mikuni Carbs

Recommended Posts

anonymous.shyster

Hi,

Recently picked up a rack of carbs of a Yamaha R1. Plan is to fit them to my '74 Peugeot 504 along with a T04 Air Research and Microsquirt ECU. Over here in Australia, I'm possibly the only person who has ever fitted R1 Mikuni carbs to their car. I've been a regular on Aussiefrogs.com and a few people have suggested retro-fitting carbs to their fuel injected cars only to be shouted down by the proponents of EFI, so it's not exactly popular over here.

So, I've got a few questions:

1.) What bikes use 40 mm Mikuni CVs besides the R1? I know Suzuki and Kawasaki used Mikuni CV carbs, but I don't know which, if any, used the 40 mm. Knowing this would give me more options for chasing parts locally. Up until this point I've just been buying parts from the US and getting a friend over there to post them on, it's slow, but atleast you don't pay 100-200% more.

2.) Needles. I bought the carbs from the US and as such, I didn't get adjustable needles. It's approximately $60 per adjustable needle here in Australia, compared to less than $15 in the US (unfortunately the ones purchased in the states are likely to be non-adjustable). What I've decided is the best course of action so far is to buy shims and shim the stock non-adjustable needles until I'm happy, if not, buy a set to Dynojet needles form the states for ~$100 (or Ivans). Question is, what are others doing? What needles are you running and on what needle position? This varies for everyone, but I'm wondering if someone found a good taper that could work well for most passenger car applications.

3.) Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) did not come with the female three pin plug. I've searched for days on end looking for one, but have not found someone who supplies them. They're not showing on the Yamaha parts fiche under carburettor or wiring loom. These mystery plugs, where do you buy them? The local bike carb 'specialists' that I've been referred to by local bike shops are clueless on anything to do with these carbs!

In reference to number 2 the needles you have should have some level of adjustment as the should have 3 or so notches on the end with a circlip that you can remove to enrich or lean the mixture?

Also why do you need the original 3 pin plug? Would it not be easier to source a jpt plug making it easier when you build up your ecu loom?

No, the US models did not come with the five notches machined on the top of the needle. There is only one notch.

Don't need the original plug, however I'm looking for one that is similar enough to fit. I'm sure there are thousands of different plugs on the market, with most distributors shopping only a fraction of them, and retails stocking a fraction of what a given distributor stocks. Without some identifying part number or name, it makes this very difficult.

What is a jpt plug?

I did find a thread somewhere where the OP was asking about finding a plug. He came across this: http://www.dataspares.com/acatalog/_C312.html

It looks right, however in the usual poor forum etiquette the OP failed to post back his results.

A jpt plug or junior timer plug is the 3 pin plug most pug cars are fitted with for things like sensors and tps, just google either of the terms and you will find a pic.

I have a set of Yamaha r6 carbs lying in the shed which I butchered years ago to put on a zetec, I'll take some measurements of them if you want as I'm sure the have at least 3 notches in them? If they're right I'll post them out for a few quid?

Did a google for jpg plug, but I'm not sure which one I'm looking for. A very varied result.

Any info will be appreciated, and if someone does find a plug, I'd gratefully take it off your hands :D

Here is a picture to make sure: tps.jpg

I can only find wholesalers of that plug online but eBay reveals this:

Click me!

Doesn't look like an exact fit but may work?
