8V Turbo Wiring Help

Recommended Posts

mannings

I am in the middle of wiring up my 8v turbo conversion but stuck on a few items. If anyone could help I would be very appreciative. I have also spent many hours reading up on here so I either missed the information or am not good using the search tool, so I'm sorry i this is stuff that has been asked many time, I did try.

For the wiring I have reviewed many threads on this forum and poured over different diagrams and info I could find. Initially I started with a guide from Daviewonder and this helped but found that analysing the diagram against the 406 engine and main loom was the best way forwards. I am just about to build a support loom for the engine from the donor car loom and interface this as required to the 205 wiring. From the diagram I reckon this should include the maxi fuse box, fuse box, bridge block, inertia sensor, vehicle speed interface module, diagnostic connectors, purge canister, coded keypad & the blue and brown connectors which interface with the engine loom. And with links to 205 as required. I am nearly there but can't work out a few bits.

I have a few questions though which would appreciate some help on:

1. The inertia sensor is on the 406 loom and could use in the support loom as I call it, but would it be better to use the 205 inertia switch with I believe I have found in the nearside wing by the horn, any suggestions?

2. Is it OK to leave the Purge Canister off as I don't have room, or could I leave the soleniod attached so that it doesn't mess up anything?

3. Do I need to Vehicle Speed Interface Module? I assume not as this look like signals go into the instrument panel which of course is different on the 205.

4. I don't seem to have an oxygen sensor anywhere at all, I have found the connector but no wiring or sensor, has anyone got one for a 406 turbo lump or where I can get one

5. Also I have a sensor that I can't work out what it is. It has a hex head with connector attached and looks like copper approx 150mm in length. It has a 10mm diameter with a silver plunger in the tip that pushes down. It looks like it had an oily past so thinking engine or gearbox related and is located just off from the ignition applifier module but have no clue what it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

6. I have worked out the wiring for the radiator temp sensor and rad fan, can I use this as is in 205 or do I need to interface this to the 406 ECU somehow? I hope not.

7. Can anyone point me in the direction of a wiring table for the 205 GTI 1.9 as all the original wires have been cut from the original connectors. I also can't see any numbers on the wires. Is there a colour code guide kicking around??

Sorry for all the questions and thanks for any help

the 205 doesn't have a Interia Switch/fuel cutoff you can either mount the inertia cutoff switch in a suitable place in the engine bay, but most people just cut it off and join the 2 wires together

2. Is it OK to leave the Purge Canister off as I don't have room, or could I leave the soleniod attached so that it doesn't mess up anything?

lyou can leave the cannister off but leave the solenoid connected otherwise i think it will register a fault in the ECU. It may affect fueling if not connected but i dont think anyones ever come up with a definitive answer

3. Do I need to Vehicle Speed Interface Module? I assume not as this look like signals go into the instrument panel which of course is different on the 205.

You need 3 pin S16 dual function speed sensor for the gearbox. It incorporates the mechanical speedo cable aswell as a plug to send signal to ecu. you can bin off the module then(if you don't have it)

4. I don't seem to have an oxygen sensor anywhere at all, I have found the connector but no wiring or sensor, has anyone got one for a 406 turbo lump or where I can get one

Any generic 4 wire lambda sensor will work(ebay)

5. Also I have a sensor that I can't work out what it is. It has a hex head with connector attached and looks like copper approx 150mm in length. no idea i'm afraid, picture would be good

Rad fan wiring & switch is completely self contained on the 205 so you don't have to do anythign with it

7. Can anyone point me in the direction of a wiring table for the 205 GTI 1.9 as all the original wires have been cut from the original connectors. I also can't see any numbers on the wires. Is there a colour code guide kicking around??

colours weren't always consistant i'm afraid, have a search for "brown Multiplug" diagrams it may come back with a pic and numbers/colours you can have a start with

thats your reverse light switch, it fits in the gearbox just under the arm that the end of the clutch cable attaches to

had a feeling it was something along those lines, thanks. Heading over to pug in minute so sure I'll have a further string of questions later

If my old memory serves me correctly this is all you need to know-

Great loosk like what i need. I'll review that against 205 wiring diagram to make sure I know what i'm doing.

Also a quick point on the VSS. They pretty expensive for proper ones. If I don't buy a dual input VSS and stick to my single input VSS that I have will it effect the engine performance?

I can live with a lack of speedo but read that not having the ECU linked to the VSS, combined with lack of lamda causes poor engine management and fuelling.

So is sticking with the single input OK as long as I am not fussed about the speedo in the short term??

The VSS is available from ebay often enough for a Valeo unit, around £25-30, I believe Miles has a source as well.

also pretty common in breaker yards too as they are not specific to the S16, you'll find them on TU3 engined 306's as well.

As to the specific issues you get on the turbo engine I don't know, but on the n-a engines you get a ruddy annoying flatspot and poorer fuel economy.
