New Peugeot Gti

New cars don't need more power but LESS weight!

slightly silly question; but i think i need to ask it

With pug trying to produce a 'new' 205 gti - why not just buy a COMPLETELY RESTORED 205 gti, with the little niggles sorted, for some ludicrous price of course (£10,000+) ish and have the real deal - that would surely be a better solution

OR:

if peugeot made an actual 205 gti, with minor revisions to the structure/chassic etc etc. so it could have airbags air con and a better safety cell. but then dump in the proper engine, like one of the engines they are talking about?!

I think that the natural evolution of cars and technology, combined with the consumer public's obsession with having more this, more that, better this, and better that, has created this catch 22 situation.

To start off with, all small cars are now big, because of saftery regulations. and because they are bigger, they weigh more. They could employ fancy materials to offset the weight, but that increases the cost, so that's not really done at this end of the market.

So because the cars are heavier, they need to be more powerful.

Add to that, that these days there's an expectation for hot hatches to be in a performance bracket that 20 years ago would have been the territory of much more exotic sports cars. More power needed.

But then you've got economy and emissions to consider. They need to employ better technology to achieve that and the power. So that's more complicated electronics, and sometimes additional mechanical components, which means..........more weight.

So we've now got a small car that is big and heavy, but with plenty of power, and much faster than hat hatches from the good old days. The public want to go fast, but they want to do it safely, with bells and whistles on too. So they NEED 10 airbags, traction control, stability control, electronic LSDs, blah blah blah, and they want to do it whilst sitting in leather clad sports seats (with curtain airbags), whilst seeing all their otions on a touchscreen systems and blasting their tunes out on a 10 speaker plus subwoofer system.

Weight, weight, more power, bit more weight, extra safety, weight, more power, weight.

It will take a very, very brave manufacturer to try and break this cycle, and it will be a miracle quite frankly, if their product actually sold in significant numbers. I'm afraid that people like us are in the minority, and so we are not catered for.

New cars are definetly getting bigger, I saw a Sierra behind a new Focus the other day and the Focus looked bigger, even though it is a follew-on from the old Escort, which is the size of a new Fiesta !!!!!!!!!!!

What Welsh says, I think manufacturers are realising that weight saving is a way forward, look at the new Mazda where they claim to have saved 100kg.

Indeed, I remember reading that the most recent Fiesta is the first new fiesta which was lighter than the previous model. Does seem that all manufacturers are moving in the right direction

Saving weight is the way forward for the manufacturers, im sure they will use uprated weight saving technology designs in the car parts etc. Much like how some or all of the companies that make aeroplanes, its to save its lifetimes worth of fuel. They design parts so they are just as strong yet much lighter by changing a few design features etc. Im sure they could make some body panels in a much lighter material. Then again the quality side of things is a key factor in doing this, people are use to having quality cars now and maybe other materials will change this somewhat.

It's gonna be a disappointment, get use to it  The ball games changed from the 70s-80s. Emissions, safety and the like.

Looks okay but bloated like most modern cars.

Wasn't the 207 GTi meant to be the GTi come back?

That car looks horrible, Renault front and Ford rear, another car designed by rules and regulations rather than flare and ambition. Shame.

I agree. Specs sound great, but the new model is all but guaranteed to look hideous. You could swap badges between of the exteriors of any of the top brands' 'hot hatches' and it wouldn't make a jot of difference. They all look like they were designed by a committee of bureaucrats, not artists. The only small car design that has any kind of personality these days is the Mini.

Why are they showing pictures of 5 door cars????? surely thats not what a hot hatch is all about!!!!

I think most people who get new cars now are either

a) spoilt little fags who get parents to get them a new car

B ) rich peole who buy 80,000000000000 tonne audis and german cars with huge engines

c)people who dont care so want a cheap car or pay a little bit more for a more reliable car

It will never take off because the world is a mess and people cant afford luxuries like that at the moment (unless it becomes the next spicewagon like the mini), plus it looks nothing like a gti and looks like a typical 21st century faggot wagon. The 207 at least retained a bit of its own stlye this is so generic i want to spit at it.

I'm very glad Peugeot have revised their design in the current range. I rarely think new cars look great but the new 508 is simply a stunning car, one of the few new cars I would own, in either normal or estate guise. I drive past a Peugeot garage every day now and they've just got a couple in

It won't handle like a 206 as its based on a DS3 surely?

I was going to post up, but don't need to now, this is pretty much exactly how i feel. Well said GLP
