What Other Cars Do You Own?

Recommended Posts

The e36 is outright faster than the e30 but smile per mile the e30 wins for most people..

Go back ten years and you'd pick up a e30 m3 in good nick for less than 5k, same car today would be 15k+

So many people must be kicking them selves they didn't buy a few of them and stuck them in the garage.

The e30 is about a million percent cooler too.

I had an e36 2.5 td sport before with the full m3 kit and lsd etc and with a remap i loved driving it, used to drift for fun handle class and was smooth as a babys

E30s are cooler looking but the e36 enters the new luxury car class for driving experience

Theyres a lot of hairdressers on here isnt there ;)

We just make the hairdresser thing up to keep all the trolls from wanting to own one. ;) I had the same attitude, then i decided i wanted something rear wheel drive after doing a bit of karting, I bought it "for my girlfriend" and laughed at how much better it handled than my pug, mine is JDM and has a diff, it goes sideways often you're a brave.. or sideways once.. if talent is lacking. I found this out after a wet race at rye house, lobbing it in to a bend and stamping on the throttle in the pissing rain, it went.. and kept going until the armco stopped it. :(

Anthony said this to me about them when he took mine for a spin "You could read a book before having to correct the over-steer, they are so controllable" as far as rear wheel drive goes, they are about as easy to drive as it gets, in the wet too if you're not ham fisted with your inputs. You can drive them very hard with relative impunity.

Recently I got it four wheel aligned and we put toe out on the front.. and rear by accident, now it's nervous under braking and the back won't let go, it's grippier but not as fun, so I'm going back again for a touch of toe in at the back.

Conversely I found the mid engine Elise a friend let me drive abuse at one of Andy Walshes handling days understeered at low speed, was neutral between 40-70, then nervous and twitchy beyond that.

I also drive thrash the s*it out of one of these against about a hundred other like minded people once a month, they are direct drive, no clutch, and run on slicks regardless of the weather. On a drying track like clay pigeon (skip to last five mins) they are a rewarding handfull.

E39 m5 one of the best BMW's.. That's a bold statement dude ;)

Try reading what's actually in front of you instead of replying with no relevance to what's actually been said.

this is what i was talking about, 12 months ago i was looking at m5s and there was a few for 3500 on ph, which yeah they were not prestine its was more tyres and exhaust bits thy needed.

E36 m3's will kill an e30 (not sure about normal but the evo will and i bet it would also easily which is why people drop the engines in e30's (if you get a good one with no vanos problems)

One of my former good friends had an M3 E30 LHD Johnny Cecotto edition no: 05/505 made and i also drove it a few times and my other m8 had an e36 m3 evo which quite happily sailed past a 360bhp escort cossie and would of killed the e30 easily.

Point in making is at the time i was looking i could of got an e36 m3 with 100k on for 4k min and m5s were less which is why i looked at them. And now its the other way round again

FFS, simply racing 2 cars will not tell you which is the better one, just because it may be more powerful, faster in a stright line and newer, doesn't mean it's better. Look at the new CS thingy, why didn't they have an E46 CSL out at the launch party of that when they had every other M3 there??

And again, unless i missed something or something else's amiss, E39 M5's never dropped that low. Engines are still changing hands for more than that alone...

These are discussed to great depth in many places, one can be a polar opposite to another, hence running one can be an amazing or financially ruinous experience, every time i read a good report on one i want one, but it only take another's nightmare story to turn me off again!

& joking aside, hairdresser or not i'd have an MX5. Does it not make you wonder why many people do? It is for good reason, one of which is that they're not as small minded as some.

I drive Volvo estates, which obviously makes me a flatcap wearing buffoon that bimbles around not indicating and getting in everyone's way. If you say so officer! ;)

Yeah but ive been lucky enough to drive both cars and owned an e36 which had the full m3 set-up bar the engine and i can safely say its a much better drive than the e30 although i like e30's better looks wise and its a car id rather own collectively. The e36 is a very good platform than delivers power well and copes with it well too round the corners, this is why they disliked in a way now because they are so good and cheap which makes them common.

Ive never drove an m5 i just looked at them, but i definetly say some change hands for 3k, im good at finding deals though. My and my brother hunted around and got for his 2006 exige for 3.5k less than there advertised elsewhere we got it for 16.5kl. Every other car in the country his spec at the time was advertised for for 20k. Its just about looking as it came from a specialist garage aswell. And all you do is take the 40 quid warrently deal and if anything goes like clutch etc its done and sorted for free ;)

Ive read articles etc about the mx5 been quoted one of the best handling cars of its type etc but for me.

1)they look girly

2) they are mega slow

3)Id have a elise over one anyday as ive been around and worked on them alot with me brother having so many and you can get s1's now for 4k or less with knakard engines etc. They will obliterate an mx5,look better and are basically everything the mx5 should of been from the start.

Its personal taste but i think they are awful and look feminine so i couldnt bring myself to own one.

volvos have a big tuning following as well i know, alot of the lads at york run the estates on the strip in the summer when im down.

Ive been tempted by flippy headlight mx5's a few times but within two minutes of being on pistonheads I always find my self looking a e36 verts instead lol.

I'd say the inaccurate s*it you post makes you sound like a cock. Oh and there was nothing sly about it.

Don't tell me what I can and can't post.

Elise is the car the MX5 always should have been? I suppose thats why the MX5 didn't really sell that well

Also reference the comment about a MK5 being slow, surely your missing the point of the car in exactly the same way a 1.6GTI is relatively slow?

slow? granted the phase 1 1.6 wasnt that quick, it only had 115 bhp, but weighed 980 kilos, 1.8's were 132-150 bhp and hardly weighed any more!

then you have the late turbo'd 1.8 mk2's, 180 bhp, 1060kilos.

440k sold from 89 to 97....

Its a VERY different car to the Elise, one is F-R sports car, the other a Mid-rear race car adapted for the road!

corsas sold very well but that does not mean i must own one -_- , the funny thing is i was down my local garage this morning getting the gti on the ramp and low and behold a mk1 mx5 was in for new disks and pads. After a good look around it all i could say was rot box fag car. Everything about it was naff, and under the bonnet even looked over complicated for what it is.

In my younger years when i used to race around my 19 gti with 16 box on used to kill my friends on the way to work .

Granted the turbo model sounds like it could be quick but the lad from work had the 1800 and i didnt rate that as quick still.

Im used to my brothers exige power wise now so an mx5's power through the rear to me would just seem lame and i dont seem the point in such a low power rwd

A 16 gti for example like you said is yes a slow car but i love the gti for its iconic history and the fact it was build in the era where cars where mental and delvelopment was at its best so its a classic, i can bare the loss of power on that basis. And it also does not look like im going for a cut and blow dry while im driving it, some of you will always like them and i will always dislike them as i dont think its a mans car.

But like people have said its all down to taste and i will never ever ever like a car that looks so girly

I cannot believe some of the small-minded guff being posted on this thread.

Why do some people have to insist that x car is "BETTER" than y car?

Because it just doesn't hold true.

Why not just accept that for person a, x car is better for them, person b prefers y car, etc.

That is life.

Most people that slag off the MX5 have probably never driven one. Nearly everyone you speak to who HAS driven one, like them.

I agree with Tom's above post, how can you truthfully say that car X is better than car Y if you have no first hand experience of said models?

I've never driven an MX5 etc but have been passengered in one.

I wouldn't slate them & would have a drive in one to see if they lived up to my expectations from what I've read & heard about how much fun they are.

I get stick for driving a "crappy french car" when 98% of the people I work with drive things from the VAG group, I drive what I want to drive & having driven older versions of the Golf etc I'm simply not interested in owning one just yet.

If everyone had the same car & tastes, boy this world would be a boring place.

I must admit ive never driven one but i was a passenger in one been driven in anger round some country roads in Huddersfield. The best man at my m8s wedding was given one from his parents when they got a new car to run about in and all i found was it reminded me of how noisey MR cars are inside the cabin but with the engine been in the front i shouldnt be. The whole time he was flying around these crazy roads all i could think was i wish i was in my gti instead
