My "new" 205 Gti

I had a lucky find on ebay a few weeks ago but lost out by one increment, luckily for me the winning bidder messed up & the car was relisted.

Ebay pictures;

I found it again by chance after I got back from Spain on sunday night & watched it closely.

I was at home when the auction ended so with the price below my max bid I waited until the closing seconds & stuck my bid in.

This time I won. :)

I picked it up today & my mind changed twice during the ~60mile drive home, track car it or leave it a nice original 88k one.

Presently its staying close to original with maybe one or two hidden updates.

Bad points, slight rust patch unde rear seat, heavy surface but not serious & o/s rear sill by the rear arch, again, heavy surface but easily repired.

Some one has also fitted a Be3 box, seller claimed it was a 1.9 but I'm not so sure.

Annoyingly though, whoever swapped the box has for some strange reason changed it to the orignal Be1 clutch quadrant & pin rather than teh Be3 clutch mechanism. Still remakabkley light & smooth, far better than many I've seen but they also refittted the reverse stop so you need to lift the collar to select first & strangely also fourth down from fifth but not from third. :wacko:

I've a Mi16 Be1 box I might fit but first I want to make sure what Be box is fitted. Its got 205/60-14 tyres on the front so the gearings isn't quite right but it feels to short for a 1.9 box to me condsidering how it drives & pulls the gears.

Beam needs a refurbed one fitting, its not seized but very stiff on drivers side so it'll be coming off asap for a refurbed one.

Other than that I'm very happy with my ebay purchase, even after breaking my own rukle of not viewing a car before bidding on one fairly close. Bonus is though I saved myself a 120 miles round trip just to have a look.:)

To be totally honest, its actually far better than the pictures made out on ebay & if I had gone to view it before bidding I might have made a giddy offer of more than I won it for.

It's had a repair to the inner wing but They've done a neat job & managed to keep the jack securing stud unlike some I've seen.

I insured it before collection for £120 at an agreed value which now I have the car I'm going to phone up to increase because it's so much better than I expected.

Is this the original stereo? I thought they had clarion but I supposed they might've had a different optional upgrade or something to this one, or the other way round.

Tax tomorrow, oil & filter change , swap tyres to correct size & then take it for a nice run to find out what gearbox is fitted.

I've already removed the reverse lock out cable & swapped it for the breather so I can now select all gears with ease.:)

I think with a spot of plasticare, some fresher lights, and some newer tailgate badges, it'll look very nice indeed. :)

I had a stereo just like that in my (first) '86 D 1.6. Pretty sure it was standard fit prior to the common Clarion.

Thanks everyone, it does appear to be the standard stereo, in fact I can kinda remember them in frineds 205's at the time when we first got them.

Took it to the local pug dealers on wednesday & the lad I showeed the car to said it also has the original front mud flaps. :)

Did the oil change & put a standard airbox back on, somewhere one of its previous owners had cut the hose between the airbox & afm & jammed a small K&N in, turned towards the battery.

I swapped the front wheels for some with correct size tyres & took it for a run, feels like a good 1.6 but really not suited to the 1.9 box.

Like I said above, I've got a Be1 Mi16 box so I'll be fitting that soon after some consideration & having a play on one of the gear ratios calculator I have & the Mi box I have might not be as bad as I thought so I'm going to give it a try after all.

mibox.th.jpg

I also gave it a quick wash & Techwax clean on Wednesday;

You coming in it to the lancs meet?

Hopefully, need to swap the gearbox first & would like to have the beam done as well.

Gearbox swapped on monday, I forgotten how awkward they are to get out of the engine bay with the subframe still fitted but it went back in very quickly, four hours start to finish. :)

Yet to drive it but that'll be happening later today.

Looking at one of the ratios comparisons I have it could be a fun gearbox in a 1.6;

16mi.jpg

Blue is standard 1.6 ratios & red the Mi box I've just fitted.
