Recommended Rally/race Prep

Recommended Posts

brandon7

Hi I am about to start building up a 205 rally car for stage rallying.

I am looking to have a professional prep company install a 1.6 16v engine (Probably TU) in the car and wondered if anyone knew of a good company to deal with.

I would look for them to tune and install the engine including mods to the mounts and fitting etc to my 205 as my mechanical knoweldge is a bit limited. I feel I know enough to see the project through and finish it once the car is running.

I am still new to the TU converstion idea but at this stage feel the benefits would be worth it. I want to build a competitive car and see a more modern engine as a better choice. Ive heard there can be probems with customs drive shafts and engine mounts on the engine swap.

Any information on a good prep company for the conversion for rallying would be appriciated!

Cheers all

You'll find a lot of companies around willing to take money off you, but before you start on any path I would say consider your budget first.

I would suggest on the engine and indeed the prep front having a chat with Sandy Brown / Colin Satchell. Sandy has achieved a lot with the TU engine and combined with Colin's engineering skills I am sure you would have a very good package at the end of it. Like I said though you need to be very sure of the costs and budget before you start though. You'll spend over £1000 to cage your shell regardless to do it right either bolt in or weld in by the time it is fully installed.

THanks alot for your quick response. Some sound advise too and a bit of name dropping, Nice one. Yeah I thought there might be some companies like that so would rather just go see certiain people based on recommendations and past results.

The car I bought a half finished project. Its a rolling shell with a welded cage already in and its been done to a really high standard. Its been reinforced around the struts at the top, on the cage feet there are box sections and even preped to the extent of a a plate around where the brake servo mounts. It has alot of potential and saw it as a great bargain.

Do these guys you mentioned own a company or are they just experienced builders? Do they work together?

Cheers

Best thing to do is PM the user Sandy (aka Sandy Brown) or have a good read of his posts. I know he is busy as always currently, but he will help and advise and with the results he's achieved with the TU's (see 106 Rallye forum and Castle Combe Saloon Champ.).

As for your question, Sandy and Colin both run there own respective businesses, but do compliment each other very well in there work. Give Sandy a shout, he will give you a good sense of direction and advise you wisely which ever route you take.

hi,

i've not done a lot of posting on here but i can recommend a company based near me in northamtonshire/cambridgeshire. The company is qprep (http://www.qprep.co.uk). It is just a guy that runs his own business and has a lot of knowledge when it comes to preparing cars. He has prepared mk2 golf for rally along with mk1 escorts and is currently working on a s2000 conversion on a mx-5.

Qprep has their own engineering section as well so they have a lot of machinery (and a top notch guy that knows how to use these machines inside out) to create bespoke parts if needs be!

I would highly recommend if your wanting it to be done fully and completely professionally. I dont want to say that he does it expensively but he does it to a point where it is done professionally and top quality so to get it there may cost but be fully worth it!

If you want any more info then give me a PM or something as i know the guy that runs it well so could talk about it in more details.

:)

If you don't have an engine yet, look at the 1.6 16v that can be found in Partner/Berlingo's. Engine is similar to the 206/307 one, but has already a BE gearbox on it (iso the weaker MA box in the 206).

The TU5JP4 has bigger valves than the TU5J4 from the 106gti/saxo vts, but has less power due to the cams.

Interesting info, I'll let my mate know about that as he is forever blowing up boxes on his 106gti engine

For the 106 gti it's not a PnP replacement, but there are conversion kits available somewhere in the i-net...

you need to think as well what competition you want to do, enter the challenge and it needs to be a 1600 xu 1900 xu or 1400 tu. if your just in it for a few a year check out what cars you'll be up against on average so you can decide how to set your car up to be competitive.
