Quite easy, all the main beam fixing bolts to the shell will come undone.

Only thing likely to cause most bother are brake hoses.

Don't do it by yourself! Sh***er of a job if you do. easy job other wise just big and bulky. Bolts should be fine as they are inside.

If your just unbolting the beam complete, then its a doddle. The 6 nuts are all inside the car so wont (should not) be rusty. The nuts on the fuel tank strap maybe but I have never had one that wont come off. Handbrake cables and brake pipes (1.6) or if a 1.9 I tend to unbolt and move the calipers out of the way to save bleeding them afterwards (if going back together as it was) :)

The leaving the brake pipes connected can also be done on the 1600 cars if just doing a straight swap, remove the drums, then you can unbolt the backplates complete from the trailing arm, and manoeuver the pipes etc round the trailing arm out of the way.

I like it :)

Works a treat buddy, why disturb fully working brake hydraulics when it is the beam that is the problem you are doing the repair on!!

Its a bit more awkward than 1900 calipers, but can be done, the principle is the same.

Off topic but does anyone know if you can swap a Xsara VTS beam with the brakes still connected?

I vote no, due to all the compensator valve pipes and cr@p.

Having said that, I have done a couple of 206 GTI's, these have a union placed in a handy place that can easily be split and swapped onto the new beam, so you may be lucky.

That was my initial feeling when I had a look underneath but I thought I'd ask in case someone had managed it.

Afternoon,

Removing the rear beam is easy even if you are doing it yourself. The hardest part is getting the new one on but a good trolley jack and some patience is a great thing to have.

If it is a 1.9, I would suggest giving the rear calipers a little bit of a refurb as the guides in mine were seized.

It can be done on a 306/xsara with the compensator :)

Excellent, I need to get on and do it really, tyres rubbing on inner arches is not a nice sound :o

crumbs, I've taken a few totally shot ones apart that didn't rub at all, dread to think how far through the tube that one has worn

It has a tow bar fitted, the previous owner towed a boat with it which I suspect didn't do it any favours.
