Driveshafts

I'm looking to replace both driveshafts on my car (1.6 gti) but it's proving more tricky than I expected! The car is only for road use, but I'm after some good quality parts, as close to OE as possible.

 

I've spent the last 3 weeks trawling this forum and the internet in general looking for suppliers and have found the following:

 

1. Peugeot no longer supply shafts (new or remanufactured)

2. My local GSF tells me that they no longer supply GKN driveshafts (as GKN have pulled out of the UK market), and they only have one N/S shaft in the country left, made by Delco Remi?? The guy I spoke to said there were no plans to stock any more 1.6 driveshafts. Loads of 1.9 shafts though!!

3. Q-drive get a pretty bad write up on here by all accounts so I've ruled them out

4. I've heard AMK and Shaftec are ok, but can't find any suppliers

5. AB motorsport are selling shafts on ebay, but they are 309gti shafts

 

So, it appears there are limited options for sourcing new/re-manufactured 1.6 driveshafts. Does anyone have any good experiences with a particular manufacturer that they can recommend please? Or is it time to buy a 1.9 instead!!

have you tried Mill Auto? or ECP?

 

Currently started using Mill as my local GSF is rubbish, always going back swapping parts because they are the wrongs ones, or just poor quality and dont fit.

I spoke to peugeot last week and was told they can still get them but they take a while to get them so they told me to try peugeotparts.co.uk who had them in stock and were genuine peugeot.

AMK shafts can be had from either a Unipart motor factor, or any Motaquip dealer. You can find your local branch of either via the web. I have found the AMK shafts to be better than some others.

Cheers for the replies guys.

 

Tried Mill Auto, don't deliver to Leicester and ECP only stock Q-drive parts.

 

But have found a motaquip dealer selling AMK parts at £43 ea plus surcharge. Will try and speak to peugeotparts tomorrow (closed on Mondays!) to see what they have, but otherwise I think it will be the AMK shafts.

 

Seems Tom's had good experiences of AMK, can anyone else vouch for their quality? I guess it depends how many times they've been re-manufactured!

I got a pair of Q-drive from ECP recently, correct part number but wrong shafts, eventually sourced Shaftec from GSF, cheaper than ECP, £61 each I believe...

A friend has managed to procure some brand new old stock GKN shafts, i know he has some 309 ones but may have or be able to get some 1.6 ones too, i shall enquire!

1.9/309 shafts have a different number of splines on the outers to 1.6 items so need the matching hubs yes.
