At the moment my gear stick seems to float about like a d*ck in a top hat any ideas?

I tried a top hat and I'm so large I could barely fit.

Is it like stirring porridge??

Can't remember the exact problem, check the 13mm nut in the subframe and the conditions of the linkages, and you'll get a shaft as tight as a nun.

The nut holds on one of the pivots. There is also a bolt on top of the subframe but apart from that only worn linkages would give you a wobbly stick.

get under the car, there is a 13mm nut inside the subrame which you need to tighten

not really! Both Miles and BBM sell brilliant new rods, which have little pin clips on them, about £60 from memory for all 3.

minimising engine movement helps alot too when you change gear, especially with some spirit!

As said the most common reason for very very sloppy gearsticks is the ball on the subframe as the nut come's loose under it, Next is the 'L' bracket but the bush's for these are a couple of quid from Pug and then the linkages which tend to pop off when worn and yes will increase the sloppiness of the change but not allot
