Wiring Woes

Recommended Posts

I have a few 205 'GTi6' wiring queries

Wired my shunt box up and just wanted to check I have done it correctly and the positive cable is man enough for the job. I have 3 plugs connected underneath and the positive cable goes straight to the battery (I know some people run it to the alternator instead? Why is that/is it better?)

I personally would say the wire should be a bit thicker? A previous owner is to blame if it is an accident waiting to happen.

Also while I have that picture, the fan wiring. The replicated thinner 3 wires, are they already there for twin fans?

Next one. Existing negative loom.

Firstly I imagine this plate isn't standard. Plus I ground off the bracket that held it, so it better be redundant

The earth from the car loom in the top middle of the picture, can I earth that to the body somewhere? Or what do I do with it?

Last one! The GTi6 wiring loom negative cables. Come as 2. Does the smaller one earth to the body?

I am thinking this suspension top stud would do nicely. Or should I just earth that to the body somewhere with the wire from the car loom above?

That's all for today

Shunt box looks ok, get a pic of the underneath.

The white plug your holding with your thumb goes onto the fan switch in the rad :)

That plate is standard mate, its the heatsink plate for the 8v ignition amp. Just ditch it and relocate earths else where. Although it does look like one may be redundant.

Red wire looks a tad thin to me, they're the same gauge as the striped earth cable normally, this cable is connected to the alternator on the 205 as well, via the battery ;) being a tad larger is no problem, given that it feeds the rest of the car less voltage drop you get the better,

The earth needs to be bolted to the gearbox and the plate as above isnt used, and the gti6 wiring loom earth goes to the transmission in the same place as the grey cable.

the thinner wires from the fan thermoswitch are just for diagnostic testing of the single fan system, the twin fan arrangement is totally different.

I will get a thicker positive shunt box wire on there then :)

So I need to extend the twin earth wire from the 205 loom which originally fixed to the plate, down to the gearbox. Can't I just earth that to the body where it currently reaches?

GTi6 small wiring loom earths themselves I have earthed on the gearbox (away from the negative cable, but will combine to the same earth point if it needs to be for any reason)

I think the GTi6 twin negative cable will be fine earthed to that suspension point?

It can be just bolted to the body where it is indeed, just use the bolts that secured the plate down, you dont need to use the gti6 earth as well as the 205 one, there's one one negative post on the battery

I think it's a case of 'wires' crossed

Negative wise I am using the cable that came off a GTi6. It is a twin cable. Joined at one end with a ring which is mounted on the gearbox. One of the cables goes to the Negative on the battery, the other has a small ring which I presume went to the chassis of the 306. Which I am concidering putting to the suspension turret as it is the right length and saves drilling a hole.

I'm not using any 205 cables ofther than the positive from the shunt box, and the hard wired earth from the 205 loom that goes to the ignition plate.

The 205 negative cable and battery fixing in my picture has been removed and is now in a large pile of redundancy
