Restoring Costs

Recommended Posts

looking at extensively restoring a 1.9 i bought and now looking at costs

just wondering how you guys who have done a restore have spent from start to finish and do you now use it as a daily or for nice days only?

I know it depends on what sort of rebuild it involves but some idea would be great before i start

complete rebuild you're looking realistically at 5-6k, depending on labour and other costs. a decent enough respray would be close on £2k.

If you do all the work yourself it's really just alot of time it costs.

However I say that from restoring and rebuilding mine from an already built car ( reshelled my old gti6 205) which already had a fair bit done to it ( rebuilt beam etc.)

I suppose if the paint etc is good then I would say a good grand or two to fully restore it when you add all the little bits up.

But as I said time and effort is the real key

It depends on your level of restoration, compared to a heavy service (beam, cambelt, head gasket, wheel refurb, suspension, brakes etc)

The rule is to still buy a car with the best shell as the rest can be obtained. Mint jnteriors are becoming more scarce / expensive

Without labour it costs far more than you think, tools etc all add up. Then there's the time and effort, especially if you want it done good and proper, so it lasts. You might need a welder or need welding sorted etc, around the fuel tank/sill area does tend to need a good amount of work or worse a lot of welding. Even easier if you have a big workshop with electric etc :)

ive had a complete restoration, with about £500 still needing coming in at £6k

It is a wonderful thing to do, but it does all add up, fast. plan loads, but double every major part of the budget you are allocating for each area. then you stand a chance!
