Sunroof Or Not?

Recommended Posts

recently been browsing and it seems to be the norm to have the non sunroof model, i personally always like the sunrroof but why are the non sunroofs so popular?

Probably lighter and better for a track car + a lot leak and can be a pain. There are a couple of different types some are better than others.

The main reason is that a non sunroof is more popular as it is a bit more motorsporty. Granted that a 205 looks a bit neater without the sunroof but I find the full length sliding glass unit one of the best features and it was an expensive option if not fitted as standard. Aftermarket sunroofs have the potential to leak and are harder to source parts for.

technically a roll cage is easier to fit without needing a sunroof blanking plate and there is less weight high upon the car, but this is negligible unless in intense competition. Fully loaded standard 1.9s are the ones that command the money now.

Unless your 6ft + tall it's not good (Or with a helmet on) but under that then a Sunroof is great, Bearing in mind that 99% of 205's never had A/C you need one really,

I'm 6'5', love my sunroof! Its a Britax tilt or just take it out one, doesnt leak at all. I keep all the rubber clean and in good nick so it doesnt dry up.

Mine is a track car, with a full size sliding job. I was not aware of non sunnies when i bought my car, but its very handy for summer track days when your not allowed to have your side windows open much.

Sunroofs are the best for road cars, but for track cars you don't want a big heavy piece of glass up there so a non-sunny shell is more popular.

I use my sunroof most days, I enjoy the slidey sunroof.

Just down to personal preference.

Factory sliding sunroofs are great and I haven't had one that leaks, aftermarket pop-up sunroofs are awful and I haven't had one that doesn't.

My 1.9 has a factory fit sunroof & is much better than previous GTi's I had with after-market fitted ones. With the blind pulled back, it obviously lets more light into the car & maked it feel more 'airy'. I wouldn't buy one without a sunroof, but it's down to personal preference at the end of the day.

Afternoon,

When I was hunting for my 205 it had to have a factory fitted sunroof, which is fab and I believe it is much better that the one fitted to my previous Fiesta ST.

Sliding sunroof for a road car is great. Lets lots of light in and (up here anyway) avoids the need for air con. Mine did spring a leak last winter and filled up with litres in the footwells after 3 days of rain but was easily fixed with a couple of washers. And that brilliant noise of the vacuum when you shut it again!

Non-sunroof for track/rally though. Saves having to plate it and looks a lot tidier.

If its a road car I'd have a sunroof evey time. Youv'e got options:

1. closed = more light and an airy feel to the cabin

2. open = more light, exhaust noise, fresh air

3. closed with slide over closed = cosey night driving or sick of sun. ..dark cabin.

I've driven/owned both and find the sunny the one to have tbh. Also being 6'2" give you that little more room.

Cheers

Edd

The factory vacuum sunroof loses you headroom if anything - probably a good inch or so, thanks to the slide cover and rails being sandwiched between the roof and lining that obviously isn't there on a non-sunroof car (or models with an aftermarket/dealer-fit sunroof)

The 3 we have owned have all had the full-length sliding sunroof, never leaked at all, so I have never known any different and really like having that option. Also haven't found it to hinder any movement at over 6'...yet!

How much weight would you say having a non-sunroof version would save?

Nothing comes close to spanking some nice country b-road, sunroof wide open listening to some great music, that's the only inspiration I had when trying to get my 205 finished!
