No Power To Fuel Pump.

Recommended Posts

gaz832

I was wondering about a new pump, but given a direct power feed, and earth, from a battery it works fine. It just isn't getting any power from the cars power source.

my car had this exact same problem so i added a switch to control its power on and off.

I have a similar problem, my fuel pump works fine but i don´t have power on the leads and distribuitor, what can it be????

bad connection or a fuse, given that the switched ignition live powers the coil up it wont be a relay, further on from that if you do have a live then it could be the lead from ignition amp to dizzy, the amplifier or simply a worn out rotor arm/cap.

Thanks for the continued advice guys. I checked those connections of the white wire, but only with ignition on, not with cranking, D'oh!

I'll try again tomorrow.

I feel the answer is close...

Update: I get power at the connections to the relays in the engine bay, and they click when reconnected, but there is no power at the fusebox (15A fuse, or wire 76) with ignition on, or cranking. Likewise at the ignition switch side under the steering column.

The inline fuse in the glovebox seems to be intact so I have no idea what is going on now!

if that's the case you need to work backwards through the wiring, I would unplug the fuel pump and place a fused bridge instead of the fuel pump relay which will make the wiring live so you can follow it easily without having to crank the engine over.

Thanks. I don't know what a fused bridge is, so I fear the problem is getting beyond me now!

Just a piece of wire with a fuse in it, 2 female spade connectors two male and two bits of wire.

Just manually bridge the fuel pump relay with a short length of wire, making it constantly live. To do this, link the two thicker cables together.

If the fuel pump then runs, then it must be a problem either with the relay or with the wiring that switches it. If it doesn't run still and you've definitely got power to it, then keep following the wiring back until you find the problem.

yup, that's what I meant but with a fuse inline just in case :)

Well I bridged the relay, the one on the left, and that controls the pump I think and the horn. When I bridged the horn circuit, it blew, but when I bridged to the pump, the wire got very hot very quickly and started smoking.

This doesn't seem right, does it?

Clarification: when I said "it blew", I meant the horn, not the circuit!

I guess not. Damn, I've changed the wrong relay twice then, what a d1ckhead!

I have no idea where it could be then.

Wonder what the one next to it is then...

I can't remember the specifics of loom in question, but unless they were relocated, the relays are probably behind the drivers side headlight.

Indeed they are Anthony, and in a right old mess! I suspect due to that position they were caked in crap. A good clean and Bob's your uncle!

Jeez, that was a ball-ache, and cost me a new ignition amp and coil, but at least I know they are good.

Thanks for all your help in this matter and if I'd realised that the relays against the bulkhead were not in fact for the fuel pump, it would all have been a lot simpler!

Cheers,

Antony

mine still wont go, could a dodgy battery be the fault , it might not have enough power in it to work all the electrics ? just a thought .
