Driveshaft Running Angle/alignment

Recommended Posts

dave205

How do i tell if a driveshaft is running at to much of an angle? the center of the hub is roughly 20-25m from the center of the gearbox end, will the shaft run ok like this or last 5 minutes?

The lower fork mount has been extended by 25mm approx, as recommended on here.

Its a massive headache for me if it doesnt, i'll have to change the lower mount again and the exhaust, hoses, etc ect :(

i dont think its reccommended anywhere on here to extend the fork??

i extended mine about 5-6mm and this was frowned apon. its back as std now with adjustments to the mani + d/pipe.

what is this running? gti6?

I'm not sure why people extend the lower engine mount fork. Getting hold of a reangled exhaust is by far easier to start with, results in no issues later in life and the engine runs at the angle it was designed to!

Its a 2.0 turbo engine

I remember reading it was nessary to get the clearance on the master cylinder, so i extended it.

I guess i'll have to mod it again, then adjust everything to suit again :( fairly demoralising!!

With the engine pushed back at the bottom, the manifold will be touching the body, there wont even be space to fit the exhaust at all, so cant see how people can run these conversions with out doing?!

Hence why people modify the manifold to be bent down slightly to clear the bulkhead.

With a reangled manifold which clears, people then modify their downpipe to suit.

Don't do what I did and buy an already reangled exhaust/downpipe as it's more hassle to bend the manifold to exactly the right angle to meet it. I was lucky though and got it spot on first time with a 2 hacksaw blade thickness cut. Must have moved it about 20mm down with the slightest bend.

There is always the option of modifying the bulkhead and keeping the manifold as is, but that is not recommended on a decent shell and seen as a bodge. Even then you would have to modify the downpipe anyway.

Buy a reangled manifold off the shelf from people on here, or cut and bend it yourself. I have some pictures in my project thread of the clearance issues you get otherwise, and how much I have cut to clear if it helps explain.

The amount of shaft issue's I've found with Tilted engine's these days is plain silly, No idea why as when the old Mi's etc where tilted they seemed fine although as said a Bodge to save money.

Maybe the shafts have been recon'd so many times the tolerances are on there limit

The shafts have never been overhauled yet.

Also if i wasto modify it how do you did? Machine the face on flange or cut it off and re-weld it?!

As mentioned your manifold is probably completely different than the tubular GTi6 ones that are cut and bent then welded.

I havent seen anyone on here do that? or not to my knowledge anyway

This is a massive set back :(, makes me really pis***d off i listened and extended the fork in the first place, i could of done all this before the engine was in the car then!!!

Its really frustrating, it seems it'll never ever be finished and i keep pouring money into it with no results!! This is usually when i loose interest/motivation!

All part of the fun. My engine will have only been in for 2 weeks on Sunday. I have put it in and out 5 times since. Last time this weekend hopefully.

Ive swapped the master cylinder and servo to a non gti one. I've also extended the mount so is there an issue?

Does any one on hear run an extended bottom mount on a turbo conversion if so whats the driveshaft issues like?!
