306 Meridain Hg Leaking

Recommended Posts

pugpete1108

basically my 306 meridian 1.4 is leaking oil prefusly from the front drivers side of the head (checked the cam oil seal and that is fine) so i guess its either the hg or crank seal.? i would rule out crank seal as the oil is too far up, but you never know eh

the car doesnt overheat but i have noticed some small amount of mayo in the coolant tank but only very minimal

was really just wondering how easy the job was? or anything i should look out for?

also seeing as mine is a 2001 y reg ph3 what engine type is it? tu.....

can someone delete one of these posts please, somehow i managed to post it twice.

cheers mods

Small 8v TU engine in big 306 bay, will be nice and easy! Doing it in a 205 is fairly easy. Really good engines to work on.

yeah it does look like there is plenty of space to get around, and only one cam to deal with plus i can leave both manifolds on to remove the head?

are they iron block or alloy?

Yer leave both mani's on, I believe all the later ones are iron blocks. Also parts are cheapy cheap!

The main oil seal on the HG (just by the alternator) is a common failure point on the TU engines. When you put the new gasket on put a sliver of some good gasket sealant around it to help it seal.

i have some wellseal left over from doing the 6 engine so will use that.

can i get away with reusing the bolts?

I did on my old engine in the rallye and was fine all the time I had it. Although I seem to remember some people suggesting to change them, its not vital as they arn't stretch bolts, up to you!

at the end of the day its just a cheap runabout until the 205 gets finished (the mg hasnt got enoguh seats for the family  ) and i did just contemplate leaving it and topping it up when it needs it, but its getting worse and leaving a massive oil patch in my parking space and pretty much everywhere i stop.

i think i will take my chances

I'm pretty sure they are strech bolts  I can buy sets from my local motorfactors for £11 so i don't see why you would use the old ones when they're so cheap

I think they are on the alloy block but not the iron ones, there's usually a spec for them on autodata and haynes so you can check the length to gauge whether they are re-usable, though as Mark said at £11 its probably not worth faffing.
