Distributor Clacking Noise. 1.9 8 Valve Twin 40S

Ever since I fitted my new Mark Shillaber built 1.9 8 valve engine I've been plagued by a metallic clacking sound coming from the newly rebuilt distibutor. Today, the problem has been identified and solved and I'm writing these words in case my experience will be of help to anyone else has the enountered the same symptoms.

I had connected the vacuum advance to a take-off on the manifold and side draft carburetters do not provide a steady vacuum more a pulsing which was being transmitted to the vacuum advance mechanism and it was this that I could hear. By disconnecting the vacuum pipe and blanking off the take-off on the manifold the problem was solved.

I apologise if I am the only person on the Forum who was not aware that vacuum advance and side-drafts is a no-no but if it helps somebody then I'm pleased.

John
