Annoying Ticking Noise From Engine.

As it says in the topic name, it sounds almost like the spark plugs are ticking really loudly. It's not affecting the car performance that i know of , but its just really annoying as i can hear it and i think it ruins the sound a bit.

 

Any ideas would be a big help

it also guzzles fuel a bit too much! this could also mean its the injectors? i assume they are still standard and the car is just coming up to 100k...

It could be the manifold. Changed mine on the previous pug because of this. At first I assumed it was the gasket but the manifold had worn away. Replaced it with a new one and it went away.

its the 1.6 gti

 

It has been fuel happy since ive had it but ive just replaced the exhaust system including manifold with a freeflow 4 branch etc. i assume then you mean inlet manifold?

Nope if there was a problem with your inlet manifold you would get some bad running problems, such as Missing, Popping and continuesly cutting out.

 

I have seen on here that the cam shaft can also be the cause of this ticking noise.

 

Mine makes this noise also, but im past the point of caring as i have a Mi16 in the pipe line.

I havnt changed anything I am going to order some reconditioned injectors and see if that helps.

 

Planning on building up a little 1600 screamer engine so if it holds out then I may leave it

Actually I changed the manifold to a 4 branch and the ticking noise has defiantly quietened down!

You'll never have a quiet XU engine IMO. The injectors do tick quite loudly, but it's not indicative of a fault. No harm in getting them reconditioned (providing it's done properly) but that's not going to make them any quieter.

 

Has anyone ever used injectors from an alternative manufacturer and found them to be quieter?
