Weird 205 Gti6 Speedo Issue

Recommended Posts

miamibungers

Chaps,

Occasionally (i.e. when accelerating hard from low speeds to v. high speeds) the speedo needle drops to its rest point. Only when I have let off or slowed down does it then display the correct speed.

I have checked the connection on the back of the gauges and it is fitted fine. The cable itself does seem to not have the most comfortable route to the bulkhead (comes out in between two of the exh. manifold branches) and so obviously gets very hot.

I have read on 306gti6.com that it may be the VSS on its way out? easy fix?

Thanks in advance

205 is driven by a mechanical cable, not electronically via the VSS like the 306 (phase 2/3) - so ignore that.

My guess would be that as you're accelerating the engine is moving sufficiently to pull on the cable and either disconnect it at one end - have you double checked that it's in properly and the rubber retainer is present at the gearbox end of the cable? The cable can look to be home, but isn't, and if that's the case the rubber retaining pin thing won't go in fully.

I'm having this problem as well! The cable is cable ties to tue clocks and I have had it in and out of the gearbox a couple times still intermittent! Going to try another cable, I'm using a longer 405 one to avoid the exhaust.

thanks chaps, other than the obvious the needle is very stable normally (unlike my 1.9 speedo!) so I'm not thinking its super knackered- anthony, I'll check it if I get chance this weekend, is it worth buying a longer one to reroute it away from the exhaust?- allye, glad its not just me having the problem! I think I'll double check that everythings home properly next time i remove the dash. I can live with it at the moment as its so intermittent.
