205 Gti Starting Issue

Recommended Posts

Ciaran76

Hi there

Leaving my car in on Monday to get a pre MOT check done and wanted to get my starting problem sorted once and for all.

When starting the car in the mornings I turn the key and it takes 3/4 seconds for the car to fire up - sometimes I have to turn the key again and it will start. Idle seems to be fine, just under 1000 rpm.

I'm useless under the bonnet so please excuse my lack of knowledge. I've recently had a new batter and alternator fitted and was having a problem with the fuel relay which has now been fixed. Could it be the SAD, fuel pump, starter motor or something else?

Thanks!

Is the starter turning at full pelt or slowly?

Can you hear the fuel pump?

Try another fuel pump relay?

What colour are the spark plugs?

New plugs?

Three to four seconds of turning over?

How long have you left the car for? e.g. is it in use every day?

Have you left the car for a longer period and tried to start it then, if so how long did it turn over for before catching?

Reason why i ask is that i had a problem a long time ago with the fuel pump, so all of the fuel was draining back into the tank. (i think) If i started it the next morning after a few seconds it was fine, if i left it for a day, then it could take 30 seconds or so to start.

Otherwise, usual suspects like igntion parts, spark plugs etc.

Thanks for the reply lads.

Now, not being mechanically minded at all you'll have to bear with me.

I'll have the mechanic look at the starter motor. I'll change the spark plugs and get another fuel pump relay to start with.

I use the car every day, drive into work in the morning then drive home in the evening - only about 3/4 miles each way though.

How easy is it to change the spark plugs myself?

Thanks!

Is it literately just unscrew one and screw the new one in? Just ordered a set of BCPR7E NGK.

Really struggled this morning, had four goes at starting the car and it finally got going. Seems to be getting worse.

When you try starting it does the starter motor turn the engine over at all? Does it turn it over slowly?
