Mot Next Working Day For Free Re Test

Recommended Posts

TaffyTim

I've just got my car though its mot and when it failed its initial test I took it away to fix myself. It only had an insecure side repeater and I hadn't procured the petrol cap key so no major problem.

On my sheet it said that I could get a free re test if it was returned to the garage the next working day or if left at the garage then there was 10 working days to get the work done.

How can this be legal? what's the difference between them taking 10 days tofix it our me taking 10 days to do it?

Don't get me wrong I'm not moaning because I got charged, I didn't as I took it back within a working day, I'm moaning because if it was something more involved then getting the parts may have taken a day on itself.

Is it just me or is this madness?

All i can say is always use a council run MOT station not MOT places that are a garage. Mine would have let me fix it there, then they pop out check it works job done. Iv even gone home to get another set of front tyres, they were checked and got the MOT there and then.

Weird one that, any place i've used has never charged for the partial re-test regardless of who carried out the repairs, often been longer than 10 working days too

Perhaps it's treated differently if the existing MOT has already expired to if it were still in effect. Had your old one run out?

Sounds like they want to male money to be honest and playing by their own rules.

I've always done my own work and they're lenient with the 10 day rule.

No, it was due to run out this week. I'm not sure if that had any bearing on it. Very peculiar but I'd be foetuses surprised if it was my garage being funny as I use them because they are fair.

From memory, the text that has been printed on every MOT failure sheet I've had is something like if the car is left at the garage then it's a free retest within 10 working days, and if it's taken away and bought back within 10 days then a retest fee may be charged. I assume that's VOSA's rules, but every garage has always given a free retests regardless of whether the car is taken away, even though one assumes that they're not required to.

Prehaps things are a bit tight for the garage that you use in the current economic climate, and they can't justify free retests anymore? After all, a free retest is a cost to the business (in terms of labour and occupying an MOT bay so a paying car can't be tested) and probably one they're looking to cut back as much as possible.

Simple answer is to vote with your feet and take your business elsewhere if you're not happy with it.
