Aftermarket Oil Pressure Gauge

Recommended Posts

tezza

hi guys, to save fitting a new sender unit i was going to use the old one fitted to a 205. basically i have an aftermarket oil pressure gauge i want connected. following the haynes manual to which wire is for the oil pressure on the dash i connected it up.

started the engine and bam the oil pressure hits full bar.

so obviously something is wrong with my wiring?

the oil temperature and water temperature readings are fine and accurate reading from the old senders. so whats up with the oil pressure?

Could it be the gauge is reading bar rather than psi and the sender unit fitted standard can only send psi readings?

Excuse the naïve question but I cant work it out.

you may have it on the oil pressure switch not the sender possibly

More than likely you are going to need to use the right sender for that gauge. When I tried connecting a TIM gauge to my original sender it would go to 1/4 on the gauge with the ignition on and engine stopped. With the engine running it was showing considerably higher pressure than with the original sender.

Sender and gauges work on different resistance levels. For instance you can't work a Racetech gauge with a VDO sender, you will need the correct one as GLP suggested.

I assume that if you had the same new type of sender and gauge together on a separate rating dial, that would work ?

thanks guys. cleared it up for me. seems i cant be lazy and use the current system, and need to use the aftermarket sender unit also.

your reply confused me surgie (me being dumb). how do you mean?

I was just wondering if you did have the correct types of sensor and sender then you could have one working. It could be the norm in the future when the old 205 originals are either broken, too expensive or no longer available etc.

Merlin are pretty good with senders, you will need to know the thread size/pitch of the sender, someone on here helped me with the size of my temp sender, or i think service box state the size.

Pressure senders on the 1.9 are M16x1.5 iirc. If it is we do some adaptors so you can fit a 1/8"NPT sender (common size)

The oil pressure switch is M16 - the oil pressure gauge sender is 10x1 on XU5/XU9 engines :)

GTi-6 and S16 (XU10) use M16 oil pressure gauge senders.
