Identifying 1.6 Engine Type

Recommended Posts

Evening all

Following on from my 'Snapped timing Belt' post, I managed to remove the head and it's currently being rebuilt.

I also need a selection of parts ranging from timing belt to head gasket. My local dealer will not do anything without a chassis no., but as its a rally car and the engine and shell are different, this is of no use. I've searched for a parts number guide but to no avail.

I found a company called Autofive who stock all the parts I require - but need to know if my 1.6 engine is the early or latter type - are there any physical differences between the two?

Thanks

Gerard

Assuming that they're talking about the 105 vs 115hp engines, it'll almost certainly be the later - breather on the cam cover is a giveaway of being a 115hp engine, and the engine code will be B6D or B6E assuming that the place/marking is still present above the alternator. The early 105hp engines are getting very rare now!

Some late (1992 onwards) 1.6 engines used a different tensioner, cambelt and waterpump - easiest thing to do is to take a look at the tensioner and see if it's the spring-loaded type (earlier setup with 113 tooth cambelt and waterpump without the cast in flange) or the eccentric tensioner (late setup with 114 tooth cambelt and waterpump with the cast flange that forms part of the cambelt cover).

Even if it was a early one all the parts are the same anyway so why they asked I have no idea or lack on knowledge maybe, The only difference was the revision of the head bolts from around 1988 to the torx bolts from Hex.

I was chatting to them on the phone yesterday, the guy said just to order all the parts from the website.has anyone had any experience with their parts, whats the quality like?

The stamp on the block above the alternator reads b6e, but it has the spring type tensioner, so is it the post 92 engine?

Personal hate of mine is when you get shoved to a web site, Whats wrong with talking to someone?

I'm on the Derry side of Dungiven. The engine was taken ot when I put the Mi16 in. Was a very good engine. I have stripped to inlet off it and removed the rocker cover to inspect the cam. Was intending to build the engine but at the minute I'm up to my neck in it so it's sitting doing nothing.

I'll PM you my number and you can ring me if you're interested.

Damien
