Ht Leads Causing Jerkiness

Recommended Posts

Well I got to the bottom of my running problems wihch turned out to be the plug leads. As I was in a rush and the car was off the road I went through the boxes at work and found some that went on, bodged, but went on. They were some chavvy K1 racing, bright blue quad core 10mm leads for an Astra or something.

Anyway for the last month or so I've been running these leads until I get a decent set with no problems at all. I got a set of QH leads on Tuesday - the fitment was spot on, unlike the blue ones which barely clipped onto the dizzy cap.

Then, 20 miles into these new leads the old problems come back; stuttering at low revs, jerkiness and the occasional backfire. It got gradually worse so I put the blue 10mm quadcore ones back on and it's fine again.

So two sets of leads did the same thing - but they were only 6mm single or double insulated leads. Is it a case of them just being too sh!t for the job, or does it sound like something else? I also need to get some good leads to replace these blue ones with, because as I said they aren't for the 205 so they don't fit properly.

check the contact points and the rotor arm inside the dizzy cap. Moisture/oil in there can cause those exact symptoms.

My car was doing exactly the same years ago and new dizzy O ring, cap, arm and leads from motaquip sorted it.

It's had new dizzy cap, rotor arm etc a few thou miles ago, the problem is only with cheap leads, when I fit the thinker leads the problem goes away.

i'd try and get some beru or bougicord items, last set of beru ones I fitted were from ECP but have had some from GSF in the past too, bougicord are one of the o.e brands though not sure where you'll get them bar a dealer.

Okay - I'll give ECP a call tomorrow, but last time I spoke to them they said they only kept prospark which are utter crap.

Yeah I work in a motorfactor and deal with ECP everyday, I'll see what they can do tomorrow. There's a 205 nut that works in my local branch called Paul so I'll see what he can dig up for me. I've heard a few bad things about Bosch but is this just because of the end coming off when pulling too hard, or are the leads just not great?

Not really - we buy in from the bigger places like AP, ECP etc. Owned by the Maccess group which means QH parts at cost, but unfortunately they aren't ant good in this case :(
