Snapped Timing Belt

Recommended Posts

swervygerdy

Evening all

At a rally last weekend and managed to strip the teeth of the timing belt, was flat in third when the damage was done.

The engine was originally bulit by Richard Longman.I've removed the head and left it with a very good engine man.

His first question was wether or not I've damaged the bottom end. I thought I'd ask on here to see has any one else has a similar experience and if they've got away with just bent valves or do the conrods take some hurt too?

Thanks

Gerard

ORB

Well, it'll need thorough examination. It all depends on cam/valve specs as to wether you have had a clattering or not.

I had a belt slip earlier this year, it bent all the valves, bent a conrod and sheared the pin in the camshaft pulley. So I would strip the bottom end and check especially if there has been valve contact with the pistons. the conrod was only bent a small amount only noticed with the conrod out of the engine. All this damage was done at little more than tick over.

Mine was also a Longmans head, if you need replacement valves, they guy who used to do the heads at Longmans has set up on his own, his name is Brett Simms and is very helpful if you give him the number off the head, he will be able tell you the details of the work done to the head originaly.
