Central Locking Has Stopped Working?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have a K-reg 3dr XRDT which has factory fitted central locking which recently stopped working properly. All three doors used to open on one door, albeit the passenger door very loudly (i think the motor was worn/slipping) becaus it sounded like a power drill! Then the central locking started working intermittently, sometime opening just the drivers door, or the drivers and boot but rarely all three. Someone gave me a set of central locking motors that I was told worked well so I swapped them over, however now the central locking doesn't work at all! I know it's possible that the 'new' motors are dud but what else can I do now thatt I have swapped the 3 motors over to get the central locking working again? I know 'central locking isn't a major thing but if you've got it it's nice to have it working!

Thanks in advance for any advice, Ben.

No suggestions? I have done a search on here and done what's previously been suggested - I've chedk the fuses in the glove box, I have cleaned all the connectors with emery paper & wd40 - there was quite a bit of green gunk and oxidisation which I have removed but still not working. The wires are all inside the grommet in the door and don't seem broken. I'm still getting intermittent signals from the drivers actuator to the passengers but only when I disconnect the drivers motor and then reconnect with the driver's door locked and the passenger door unlocked. When I reconnect it the passenger side realises it should be locked and locks itself but I can't get it to unlock or lock with key or even just jiggling the actuator. The boot does nothing. Any ideas?

Sounds like a dodgy connection somewhere. I'd start by checking the connections from each plug to the control unit under the steering column.

Another thing that caught me out once was the earth plug from the control unit. It's a single spade terminal that has to plug into one of the nearby earth blocks, and when it came out the central locking stopped working entirely, even though all the motors were fine.

Thanks Ryan, I'll try checking that out this afternoon. What does the control unit look like? Is it inside the steering colum shroud? Cheers, Ben
