Rear Beam Rebuild Needed - Any Recommendations (Hampshire)

Recommended Posts

kenp

The rear beam on our '88 205 GTi 1.9 is badly in need of replacing. We had it "rebuilt" once about 10 years ago by a local Pug "specialist" (doesn't post on here AFAIK) although I was never convinced that it had been done well.

The o/s arm is now seized, shows signs of negative camber and the collar between the beam and the arm has rotted. So I imagine it's pretty much scrap. Have a couple of spare arms with shafts that may or may not be usable.

Based in Hampshire, and for various reasons I can't really do it myself at the moment - need some recommendations of anyone local who can do a good job.

Ant up in Swindon would be my first choice. ;)

If you cannot find anyone closer to home I can help.

One thing I will say is that most beams no matter who has built them would be advised to be dismantled for inspection every 4 years or so, and then regreased and fitted with new seals to stop them deteriorating badly.

Miles on here (runs Pugracing) is probably the closest person to you, based a few miles North of Ringwood on the other side of the New Forest.

If you don't get any luck there, I've rebuilt beams for a fair few members on here over the years.

From your description, your beam tube and shafts are almost certainly scrap, so it's going to be less of a "rebuild" and more the supply of a complete replacement beam, and the price will be higher accordingly. 10 years is quite a long time since the original rebuild though, and even OE beams were failing in that sort of timeframe, so whilst you've perhaps been a touch unlucky, the rebuild probably wasn't that bad if it's lasted this long - to give you some idea, last week I stripped a beam that had been rebuilt by a "Peugeot Specialist" that hadn't even lasted 2000 miles thanks, as I discovered, to them not actually fitting all of the required parts when they reassembled it!

I'm going to (sort of) hijack this thread..

Is there anyone up north (scotland north that is) that does beams, or would it be a case of shunting large bits of car around the country?

I'm in edinburgh, so not north north, if you see what i mean.

cheers

Im in sheffield but regurarly travel back to motherwell area (about once a month) So if you get stuck you could maybe message Tom Fenton on here about a rebuild/replacement and i could drop off/collect your exchange beam for afew beer tokens if it helps.

That certainly works OK for me, I've one 1.9 and one 1.6 beam in the stages of being built up just now.

Thanks

Tom
