Fitting An Ew Into 306

Recommended Posts

Alan_M

I've recently got my 306 1.4 roadworthy, and having now done roughly 200 miles in it I've now realised that A) It's slow and B)It's slow!

Had an idea though, as I've got an EW 2.0 16v in the garage from a 206 with the shafts etc and was wondering if it'll fit into the 306. I believe the late Xsara's ran this engine instead of the XU10J4RS, and aren't they basically a 306 underneath?

Anybody got experience of this, or any ideas what parts I'd need?

I need to move the engine anyway, as I need the space for an EW 2.2 ;)

It is true that late xsara's used the ew10j4, but it wasnt instead of the xu10j4rs, they ran side by side. If anything it plugged the hole in the range left when they discontinued the 1.8 xu7 (albeit with a bit more power). It was the 136bhp engine, and will certainly be multiplexed which will make any conversion a ballache unless you switch over to aftermarket management/throttlebodies. I have seen a 405 with an ew10j4 fitted though, so it is possible, but that was with the aftermarket management. On another note, i have never actually seen a xsara with an ew10 engine in the flesh, plenty of dw10s though.

My EW10 is actually from an early 206, and is pre-MUX ;)

Just an idea really, as I don't need the engine and it was in good condition. Depends on what bits I'd need, but if it can be done relatively cheaply (2nd hand parts from a Xsara?) I'll probably do it.

I understand the TU subframe is different to that on an XU (or is it just a re-position of the lower fork?), and notably the box/shaft/hub arrangement. I've some 206 GTi shafts but am unsure whether these will fit. I guess GTi6/VTS items should do the job.

Ah right, i don't really know 206's, in a xsara an EW would definetly be multiplex.

Anyway, since the multiplexing issue is out of the way your next problem might be ground clearance since the EW sits at a more upright angle than the XU's. Since i have never done this conversion i can't really give anymore ideas, but heres a topic with that 405 i was on about

Also, i have seen a white 306 with the ew10j4rs engine fitted, it was in PFC magazine a few years back. A white rallye with ferrari 360 front calipers if i recall.

Anyway, i hope you give it a bash, would like to see it.

EDIT - something else i just thought is that there are plenty of 306's with the DW10 engine (the HDI's), and they are a close relation to the EW so might be worth having a look at the mounts on a 306 HDI.

This will probably help a bit;

EW into a 205, looks to be a standard gearbox mounting and a lowered r/h but otherwise standard arm possibly?

Driveshafts would be standard as its still a BE gearbox (needs to be the BE4 off an EW due to the different angle) most are cable shift which can be retrofitted easily enough, or swap the arms for 306 gear rod type.

Hubs on most 306's are the same bar the non abs 1.4's, the subframe is much the same with the fork positioned differently, I have see the XU hole drilled as standard on a few, unsure of the gear quadrant position but I think that is in the same place, just the arm itself a different shape.

DW mounts wont really help much I doubt as its an 8 valve iron block inclined like the XU, not 15 degrees and alloy block.

They are nice engines it is said, unsure of their exact weight but as they are a dry lined alloy block shouldnt be too heavy, they can be bored out easier than the Wet liner engines.

No more experience of it myself just, thoughts and date I've seen and talked to people about :)

Get the EW10 sorted and keep an eye out for an EW12 in the meantime ;)

They sound good too btw, here's one Sandy has worked on...

Yeah, I was thinking shafts shouldn't be an issue. I suppose it's a matter of collecting a few GTi6 parts and cobbling it all together. I'm hoping that there is enough extra height, given its a 306, for the EW to fit under the bonnet.

I have absolutely no use for this engine and is just taking up space. So was thinking about shoving it in the 306.

No need to look for an EW2.2, it's on its way ;)

From Hilgie's comments about them there's not that much extra height to take into account with the EW10, though I'm not sure what the block height is exactly the head isnt too dissimilar to the late XU ones, same lifters and the cams may even fit IIRC, dont hold me on that though

Pretty long stroke thing the EW12, 96mm :o wonder how far it could be bored over 86mm.... I'm sure sandy has chopped a few EW blocks up but not sure if he's seen the 2.2, not sure if its taller than the EW10 :unsure
