Emergency, Broken Down 300Miles From Home

Recommended Posts

peter

Have been visiting the OE Offshore Europe exhibition today in Aberdeen today, unfortunately tonight while driving to my accommodation the battery light came on, i immediately thought the usual alternator, or aux belt so just carried on less than a mile to where im staying so i could have a look, by this time it was making a screeching sound and a smell of burning (only for the last 100m or so).

Opened the bonnet to find the alternator and belt to be fine, but smoke pouring from the starter and now the key wont return to the off position.

So managed to remove the ignition barrel (as it definitely is at fault), dismantle it to remove the key so the van can be locked at least.

so trying to get it started again, key in the antenna ring, all ignition wires connected and then touch the blue (starter wire) to the rest the solenoid clicks but wont turn over, the battery seems fine but tried bump starting it as well but it just wont go!

Could the starter be so burnt out that its shorting out?, however when the battery lead is re-connected there isn't the spark you would get if it was shorting out.

by the way this is a 2001 peugeot expert 16v hdi

hopefully ill find out tomorrow if i have breakdown recovery, even though it just needs a starter i think.

any ideas??

Its most likely to be the solenoid wire from the ignition barrel going down to the starter solenoid. Its a common fault now these cars are getting older and tbh the thickness/ratings of the original wires they used are too thin imo.

I broke down in my 6 half way back from Cornwall last Saturday, wish i was back there tbh. It took about 13 hours to get home, dam ball joint

You fail reading comprehension, this is about a modern van. To be fair it is pretty off topic but you need to read the entire topic before you post.

thanks for the replies! ill give them a call if the breakdown recovery fails.

ive totally disconnected the starter solenoid wire then tried bump starting still no luck,

i wonder if the starter is stuck on the ring gear and has burnt out so badly its actually preventing the engine to turn over enough to start, unfortunately i have no tools to remove it.
