Hi

This is my project which I picked up on Sunday:

DSC03984-1.jpg

DSC03985.jpg

DSC03986.jpg

DSC03987.jpg

The main aim for the time being is to make it as light as possible hence keeping the costs down to a minimum.

I will post up pictures as I go but the first job is to drain all the fuel out and put fresh in and fire her up.

Thanks

Jon

Hi

The dash doesn't look like it has been cut, like others have said I think it must come apart.

I would sell the steering wheel, how much do these go for? There will be lots more sale once I have removed it all.

The door bar is bolted on at the top and bottom so am assuming it was donw like that to make it removable, however it does look a bit gash.

The plans are once it's running:

Perspex all round (except screen)

Remove all not needed wiring and lights so strip the loom out completely

Remove headlining

Remove winder mechanism and door internals

Take off all the little brackets that are not needed

Thats it for the first season as I am going to do it as cheaply as possible but once I am hooked I would have thought new lighter wheels and tyres and suspension mods were first on the list. Then get some better brakes and then move on to the engine.

As for rules and regs I am very new to this so have been reading the 'blue book' a fair bit.

The class I will be in is C2 which runs from 1.4 to 1.8 so this should sit nicely. My boss runs a Nova GTE in this class and is consistantly second.

I think as long as I keep the engine block I can mod the engine as much as I like.

Other classes are as follows:

A1. Roadgoing Series Production Cars up to 1400cc

A2. Roadgoing Series Production Cars over 1400cc up to 1800cc

A3. Roadgoing Series Production Cars over 1800cc up to 2600cc

A4. Roadgoing Series Production Cars over 2600cc

B1. Roadgoing Specialist Production Cars. Car engines up to 1400cc & M/C engines up to 875cc

B2. Roadgoing Specialist Production Cars. Car engines over 1400cc up to 1800cc & M/C engines up to 1125cc

B3. Roadgoing Specialist Production Cars. Car engines over 1800cc & M/C engines over 1125cc

C1. Modified Limited Production Cars up to 1400cc

C2. Modified Limited Production Cars over 1400cc up to 1800cc

C3. Modified Limited Production Cars over 1800cc up to 2600cc

C4. Modified Limited Production Cars over 2600cc

C5. Modified Specialist Production Cars. Car engines up to 1800cc & M/C engines up to 1125cc

C6. Modified Specialist Production Cars. Car engines over 1800cc & M/C engines over 1125cc

D1. Sports Libre Cars up to 1800cc

D2. Sports Libre Cars over 1800cc

D3. Rally Cars up to 1600cc

D4. Rally Cars over 1600cc

E1. Racing Cars up to 1100cc

E2. Racing Cars over 1100cc up to 1600cc

E3. Racing Cars over 1600cc up to 2000cc

E4. Racing Cars over 2000cc

Are you allowed any fiberglass panels?

Hi

I'm not sure about fiberglass but I do plan on finding out, it's something to look at for the future when finances permit.

Got the car started tonight, I was told the fuel needed changing so tried to pump the tank out and nothing was coming out.

I put some new fuel in and charged the battery and it started right up, am very happy.

I am going to get it off the trailer tomorrow and over the weekend strip as much weight as I can and weigh it all. Then give the brakes a once over the make sure the are actually going to stop me.

Cheers

Jon

Some more pictures after today's work:

P1000218.jpg

P1000221.jpg

P1000223.jpg

I managed to remove 5kg in weight, this was the door cards and associated parts, headlining and a lot of plastic covers from all over the car.

I will be working to remove the dash soon, then replace the windows with perspex so hopefully that should see another 10-15kg gone, maybe more.

Once complete I aim to start work on the engine bay, with a smaller lighter battery, removing washer bottle, horns and wiring etc.

I think one thing is definate, I will be fitting C5 steel wheels, it seems such an easy weight saving which will be better as it's unsprung also.

Thanks

Jon

Don't throw away the parts you strip, as they're quite rare, being Ph1.

What's going on with the wheel-lock?

OK thanks for that - I havn't thrown anything away yet so will sell it eventually.

The lock is just to stop the opportunist. You could open the door in about 5 seconds with a screwdriver so just a little extra security.

Cheers

Hi,

Completed some of the jobs over the past few days.

Been stripping out lots of weight, i'm up to around 30 odd kg so far.

I have moved the air filter to the front of the car, again saving plenty of weight as well and better cooling hopefully.

Removed the cold start pipe and am going to vent the oil breather pipe to a catch tank so didn't have to add the 2 extra holes for that.

I ordered a new header tank which I am going to sit where the wiper motor sits and by moving the battery and coil I will have plenty of room for the fuel tank.

I have also welded up the front end, bought some mild steel and made the panels myself, it doesn't look amazing but it is plenty strong enough and you will never see it.

Thanks

Jon

Less weight with out that twin fan set up!

It has to be asked, why do you want a fuel tank in the engine bay?

Also, each to their own of course, but i really don't see why you're removing the cold start and similar items, it will run like a bag of crap without it, it's barely worth the weight saving anyway.

There isn't twins, it's standard...

Yep, lose the SAD, don't need that crap, and I'd remove the fan and its housing, if I were driving in a UK 50 second hillclimb ;)

Hi

The SAD is just a device to help with cold starts, it won't be getting used in the coldest months over winter and I can just give it some throttle to start it when required at races.

The fan and housing will be removed when I take the engine out after next season, I am just doing all the easy jobs at the moment including the welding I need to get done.

The idea of the fuel tank in the engine bay came from a very competitive 205 gti. It didn't only save weight, it looked really good and there was a theory behind having as much weight in the front of the car, hence why I would also like to follow in the footsteps of a very competitive car.

For the first season cost's will be kept to a minimum so no engine or suspension mods, just to see if I do get hooked, I don't want to waste too much money if I don't enjoy it.

Great work mate, i would love to strip one out just as a track car. Not so sure on the yellow grill tho sorry. I like the all dark mean look.

I am having fun doing it but it is surprising the list of jobs I have to do even though there is nothing in it.

Yeah, I am not so sure on the grill, maybe I will try red at some point in the future.

I think that is the only part which won't be black, as I can get that free.

Thanks

OK, have finished decorating for the time being so to spend some time on the car.

I have a rough idea of what I would like to do to the suspension over the next year while I am racing:

Upper strut brace, 24mm rear ARB, New wishbone bushes, New drop links, Solid top mounts, 309 bones, Faster rack - phase one xsara vts.. de-passed

For the time being I need to fit my oil catch tank and finish off the welding on the rear quarter panels. Finally sort the brakes out:

  • Mintex m1144 / 55
  • Ferrodo ds2500,
  • Braided hoses front and rear
  • AP dot5.1

Any advice on suspension set-up would be great. I have bought a cheap set of ACB10s to run for the time being on C5 Wheels.

Thanks

Jon

Bilstein coilovers,with tarmac inserts.

RE: body panels,i think if you are going into fully modded class which it looks as though you are then you can you fibre body panels. The blue MSA handbook will tell you everything that you can and cannot do.I believe that as long as the silouhette of the car remains identifiable to the original then pretty much anything goes!!!.....don't quote me on that though.

Really got to crack on now, first hillclimb is April 29th @ Wiscombe.

I have bought and fitted a new stainless 4-1 manifold which looks good but should help flow, the cast iron one looked so restrictive.

I have also bought some braided hoses for the brakes, went to fit the fronts last night only for the flexi pipes to be rounded off, so going to get some new solid pipes today and to top it all off, the bleed nipple snapped in the caliper. I have drilled it out and just need to run a tap down it today. All fun and games.....

I have a couple of pictures, as the welding is now done and sprayed up.

If you are going mod prod, then provided the unitary construction remains in the same material you can change the other panels. So doors, wings, boot, bonnet are all ok in GRP, Carbon, plasticine etc. However no carbon roofs i'm afraid, a guy got caught out last year in an Imprezza I believe with a carbon roof that had been painted so just looked like the rest of the car and subsequently go moved into sports libre.
