how the hell can you say insurance companies arent making any money ? me and the wife have been insured 10 years now and we havent made a claim..

they've made 10k out of us over 10 year, all we got in return is a peace of paper

Yes but all the pr&cks in Burnley, Bradford, Oldham and Manchester have been skanking the system for well over a decade. Its these types of to33ers that have pushed my premium so high that I can barely afford to insure the Mi16 once it is rebuilt.

I know all too well about this - I have a cousin and at least 3 friends that have been completely shafted through 'dodgy' claims at cicumspect/notorious roundabouts.

Similar case in all. Vehicle in front (always high value - Merc/Porsche) moves off at roundabout, then slams on. Car behind goes whilst looking to right, hits stopped car at <10mph. Suddely van full of 'witnesses' turn up, driver of shunted car gets out holding neck and shouting whiplash. Boot of shunted car is opened to reveal damage from a high speed smash (i.e. done away from this incident). Serious claims then go in at the expense of the normal driver.

All true and only the tip of the iceburg unfortunately. The whole industry is in a mess and needs a government review.

I understand completely but as per the above 2 replies whilst most are in the same boat, uninsured drivers, fraudulent injury claims (as that's what most are frankly) and credit hire are the culprits.

The injury system needs a bloody brave judge to actually rule against a claimant that they don't have an injury worth a monetary settlement and set in place a precedent which would slow down a huge number of the claims currently going in. Most insurers simply pay up currently with little fight which as a consumer like everyone else I think is madness but as an insurance professional I can understand as it's in almost all cases cheaper to cough up than go to court. The simple answer is as above - change the legal system and stop it happening.

Edited to add that The Insurance Times today reported that there are 1,600 new whiplash claims A DAY being made - food for thought.

As for credit hire, it's a joke - beyond a joke. I read a thread on another forum ages ago where a member was moaning about the brand new Mercedes he'd been given while his knackered old BMW was being repaired. I can recall a time when if you twatted your car you got a Micra, Punto or whatever and razzed the bejeesus out of it for a fortnight and you didn't care. Somehow, somewhere many now seem to think that if they bump their old nail they have to have a brand new car of the same type - ridiculous. The industry are fighting back but I'm not sure that they can turn back the tide as many hire claims start within a few hours of the accident and before the third party insurer can get involved.

Direct Line do step in quickly and offer their own hire facility to claimants who have been hit by their customers and where fault isn't in dispute. Hopefully others will do likewise.

I'm in a similar situation atm, I have a 406 hdi estate I've just mot'd to sell & want to use for a trip to devon & cornwall next weekend but it needs taxing, can I tax it on a temprorary insurance policy before I put it up for sale?

I want to keep my 306 etc insured & the 406 kept on private land when un-insured.

I've heard mixed reports on it but haven't asked at an insurance brokers yet.

I can understand why they might not but I have honest reasons for why it's not on a 12month policy & want the car legal for use.

They go about uninsured / tax cars etc yet make you jump through hoops & almost impossible when you want to be legal on a car for a short period of time.

Check with the post office first. We issue certificates at the office and regularly send replacements with a few weeks to go before expiry - not yet had someone report a problem.

Just been getting some short term insurance quotes & read the t&c's with regards to taxing on temp cover;

Road Licencing (Vehicle Tax)

Whilst we as a company agree with the common principle that road fund licence (vehicle tax) should be purchased using an annual motor insurance certificate, there are many legitimate reasons why customers would want to purchase vehicle tax with a short term certificate. Whilst electronically delivered certificates are now widely accepted at many Post Offices and DVLA Local Offices, and also online via the DVLA direct website at www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk the law has not yet caught up with common practice. We cannot, therefore, guarantee that a short term certificate will be accepted when purchasing vehicle tax, and there may occasionally be instances where your application is refused.

Please note that all our Short Term Insurance policies are submitted to the Motor Insurance Database (MID) at midnight every day, and consequently any online car tax applications will depend upon the MID being updated accordingly.

Please also note that in the event of a short term policy not being accepted for vehicle tax purposes, we will unfortunately not be able to refund any premiums

I rang my local post office earlier as well & they said without seeing the cert they couldn't say.
