Dizzy Timing Issues

We've been trying to advance the ignition timing on my 1.6 but it just keeps on idleing too fast.

we did it to about 10 degrees and it was idleing at around 1200rpm. The car drove fine with lots more power but we can't figure out how to lower the idle.

the brass screw on the throttle body is all the way in. Is there another way of adjusting the idle speed?

yup, throttle stop screw, should be your starting point for the task really.

 

best thing to do is have a read of the haynes manual as it covers this quite well :)

thanks for the reply. we've just had another look and there was a bolt loose on the oil fillter. we've tightened that up and now the revs go up and down causing it to stall

It had air leak then now you have got that sorted you need to reset timing and idle speed.

Its worse now the air leak is gone. we've spent ages trying to time it up but the idle is still erratic no matter what adjustment is made.

it ran ok with the leak but the timing was backed off making it feel slow. We're totally stuck on this.

Is the hose from the inlet to the dizzy still on? This has a habit of falling off either end or cracking and falling apart.

Now you have sorted the air leak you should be able to back off the idle screw. First of all remove the throttle body and thoroughly clean it all out, solvent cleaner and compressed air through all the drillings etc. Remove the idle screw completely and get it spotlessly clean.

 

Then reassemble and get it warm and then set the idle.

Had another go at this today. looked at the haynes manual in M@tts sig and stripped and cleaned throttle and afm, and its still no better.

Could the wrong Ignition leads cause a problem? I changed these last week but looking on the net it looks like there are a couple of part numbers listed in the same brand for my car?

have you done the full test in haynes manual,checking the resistances etc?

 

personally i would be trying a known good AFM as it sounds like faulty to me.

Finally got this sorted, took it to a garage in town that does performance cars and he had it sorted in no time at all.

He said it was badly over fuelling and timing was out. Runs as sweet as now, 30 quid well spent :D

 

Would i get better performance if i got them to advance it more? they set it a 10 degrees.
