Some of the dates are a little sketchy...

Late-70's Mk2 Ford Escort Estate (1.3 I think) - owned from before I can remember until 1986 ish

'83 Ford Fiesta Popular 957cc - owned from nearly new (ex-demonstrator) until it was scrapped 2005 ish

'86 Ford Orion 1.6 - company car from 1986 to 1988

'88 Peugeot 405 GLD - initially company car from 1988, later bought off the company and sold around 2000

'00 Skoda Octavia 1.6 Estate - company car from 2000 until 2005 ish

'02 Ford Fiesta 1.25 - owned from 2005 until present day

'05 VW Golf 1.9 TDi - company car from 2005 to 2008

Worryingly, that short list basically covers the 26 years that I lived at home until I moved out! There's been an Ibiza since, but otherwise that's it in 31 years. My parents aren't ones for changing cars frequently, and thus it bemuses them somewhat the amount of cars that I've had over the years - I think at one point I owned more cars simulateously than they'd owned between them in their whole lives :blush:

It's amazing that I became a petrolhead at all frankly given that list and the fact that my parents are completely inept at anything vaguely mechanical.

My dad was never a car man. The only interesting cars he had was before i was alive. Think he had a few mini's.

Our family cars were

Talbot Sunbeam (brown)

Mk3 Ford Escort "popular" (blue)

Mk4 Ford Escort (blue)

Fiat Uno (blue) - was my mothers. Was reliable enough but in the end, it only went left.

Peugeot 205 Trio - Replaced the Fiat, and incidently the car that got me into 205's. Had funky green seatbelts. Mom always had the choke out so it didn't stall so it eventually wrecked it.

Austin 1100 - no idea of age as I was rather little at the time

Austin 1300 - died driving up the hill at Dover Castle when I was about 5 and I cried

Volvo 144DL - CBJ 709J

Volvo 244DL - VNM 844S

Audi 80GL - TPC 358X

Audi 80CL - B27 KAP

Nissan Sunny - D???? - 98k and only tyres and routine servicing; proper minicab stylee!

Rover 214Si - G??? TEA

Rover 214SLi - J???? - cambelt snapped in Herefordshire costing my Dad hundreds.

Rover 414i

Rover 45 1.6

04 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 - first brand new car my Dad ever owned (thanks to some hard bargaining on my part)

06 Vauxhall Meriva 1.4

08 Vauxhall Meriva 1.4

10 Vauxhall Meriva 1.6 - current

Some fantastic memories of the early cars on that list, especially the Volvos which back in the later 70's weren't that common. Light grey vinyl seats in the 144 in particular; I'm sure some of the skin from my legs will still be there to this day, given that we used to get properly hot summers! I know part of one of my fingers is still in the doorshut of the 244 after slamming it shut - they don't make car doors that heavy any more.

Worringly a fair few of those are now classics which makes me and my Dad feel rather old!

He never was and still isn't a car guy - my Uncle was the petrolhead and takes credit for my obsession as I apparently "helped" him change the oil on Dad's 1100 when I was about 2 (as Dad didn't know you needed to change it....) and I decided to have a bath in the drained oil much to my parents' dismay!!

Brain racking time here.

Order may well be incorrect, these are just the ones that hung about for any length of time. My dad is in the motor trade to this day so there were always cars coming and going, even more interesting was when he did repossessions for a time, some real interesting stuff used to come home then.

Ones I can remember of my Dads

Cortina Mk5 estate

Granada Mk1 estate 2.8 Ghia

Then he went through a phase of owning Renault 30 V6's, he had at least three I can remember. I also seem to remember him crashing one. Quite why he had these Renaults I'm not sure, I ought to ask him one day I guess. Not seen one of these for years.

After that he had Audi Quattro coupe non turbo.

Then an Audi Quattro turbo 10v which he still has. I can remember him buying and fitting a taller group B style rear spoiler for it, I can also remember at the time not understanding why he had done this!

Then a few years later he bought another Quattro turbo, a late 20v, he also still has this. I can remember my mother only ever driving this car a couple of times, both times successfully managing to drive around in her usual fashion and not bothering the turbo. This was OK until something happened to give her minor road rage, with a toot of the horn she hoofed it in 2nd gear and narrowly avoided crashing it as it came on boost with a wallop, all 4 tyres dug in and we shot off up the road on full attack.

The first thing I can vaguely remember my mother having was an old Simca. I can also remember she thought it was rubbish.

After that she had my grandmothers Austin 1100 VDP.

Then came a spate of Renaults, this was at the same time my Dad had the 30's. My mother got the Renault 14, again these are long gone now. She had at least 3 of these, the last one ended its life when someone pulled out on her when she was on her way to fetch me from cubs, and she rolled it in to their front garden. Luckily she was OK.

After that I think the next was a Sierra Estate, B605AOL, this was a 2.3 diesel much to my delight as it meant I could win playground top trumps as not many kids Mums had a 2.3 car. I remember this being very slow. Being a B reg it was a pretty early Sierra with only single width headlamps and a slatted grille. My dad changed this to the twin width headlamps and solid grille, it then overheated. So after that it got a Cosworth grille with the mesh centre. It also ended up with a set of 7 spoke XR4x4 alloys, and later on a Cosworth front crossmember which I seem to remember lowered it. It stayed with us quite a while.

Next up was a Mk5 Escort diesel, this had the unfortunate reg H153NOB. This was reasonably new when we had it, as I remember the c pillars cracked, and it went back to the Ford dealer for this repairing and painting under warranty.

My mother wasn't keen on "Nobby" so this went after a bit. I'm sure there were a couple of others in between but the next main car was an Audi 100CC Avant 1.8 petrol. This stayed a while. Then another Audi 100 estate, this one a 5 cylinder 2.0 in black with Ronal spoked alloys, it kind of matched the old Mans Quattro, same colour same wheels.

A few years on and my parents split up, my mother no longer needed an Estate car so bought a Vauxhall Corsa 1.4.

Add on another 8 years and the Corsa was costing more and more to keep going, checking it for its MOT I found the chassis rails rotten so got it through its test but suggested to mother that a new car was required. This prompted tears as apparently according to her the Corsa was a good little car.

I found her the car she has now, a VW Polo 1.2 3 cyl.

Highlights of dads trade/repo stuff I can remember,

Mk 3 Escort Turbo

Mk 4 XR3i

Golf GTI 16v Mk2 (my mum was given this to use for a couple of weeks, it was too racy apparently?)

BMW E30 325i Sport, Dolphin grey, black leather. Dad and I went to Snetterton in it.

Mk 4 Escort Turbo, we went to Thruxton in this, in not very much time.

TVR 350i, electric blue, only two seats, my Dad took me and a mate of the time somewhere so both of us had to sit in the passenger seat, we did not care!

Lotus Esprit turbos, 4 of them, all appeared on our drive one night. In a scene that could have been out of Gone in 60 sec, 4 brothers had an IT firm that had gone tits up, so all the cars needed repo'ing. But if one went missing all the rest would be hidden, so all 4 went in the same night.

Astra GTE, I remember loving the digital dash in this.

205 CTi, I can remember seeing the paperwork and telling my Dad they had spelt it wrong, it should be GTI. He explained why it was CTI. I was only about 7 years old at the time.

Cosworths, lots of these, my Dad built a 4x4 stage car, then sold this and got a 3 door stage car as part ex, this was turned into a demonstrator as he was doing a lot of work on Cosworths at the time. I remember going sideways a lot in this, it was a proper thing with cage/seats etc. At the time his good mate had a Mk 2 RS2000 stage car, I remember going to MASS with my Dad to collect an engine for it. I was given a MASS sticker, my Dad asked if he could have it for his toolbox, I told him no and stuck it on my plastic tool tray, I think he was a bit gutted about that! Oh and going sideways a lot.

Merc 560SEL, this was a very very fast car in 1991.

Best ever moment I think was when he had his garage business in Birmingham, his black 20v Quattro, the white 3 door Cossie, and his mates red Integrale all lined up in the workshop.

Loads I can remember also and haven't mentioned, at least 8 trucks, 6 vans, plus lots of stuff that came and went, such oddments as a Mk2 VW Polo "Ranger" that my dad really liked, a sheddy Mk3 Escort 1.6 diesel he used to commute in for a time.

I don't but I should be able to take some next time I visit my parents, provided I can remember. The CX is absolutely mint, interior is awesome and it has the fancy hydraulic suspension. :D

Austin Allegro in brown - too young to remeber reg/year

Volvo 240 GLT - "red" well thats what it said on the log book it was clearly maroon, OHG 140X was about 4 or 5 when we got it, terrible car I can remember spending many hours with my dad "fixing" it, needless to say we didn't have it long

Montego - 2.0 Diesel Turbo perkins prima engine Silver ex military H152 HEC, the map reading lights on flexible stalks were great fun, very reliable fantastic car, got stolen, I found it when i spotted it in a car park in Chester on the way to tescos

Renault Laguna - Green N539 VVU, 2.2 diesel which couldn't pull you out of bed, s*ite car destroyed one gearbox we replaced it then it failed again so we got rid, utter crap

Peugeot 205 Dturbo - H249 HTJ, don't even need to say how good it was, brilliant everywhere, went on to be used by me, then eventually we got rid if i had more space and money I would have kept it.. shame really

Peugeot 206 SW China Blue 02' 2.0 HDI - still got this

Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk2 88' - Still got this

my dad also had a crapi, mk2 jag, xj6 4.2, a few minis and some others

Mostly influenced from coming from a big family, these are the ones in my era:

Bedford midi van - 8 seater company vehicle

Vw transporter - 9 seater, my rents loved this and still remember holidays to Scotland in it!

Merc e class estate- on Irish plates, my dad got stopped all the time when the Ira were at there peak in London. Had a head on collision with a lorry, lorry driver went to hospital and my dad was fine!

Metro quest. Bought new, was crashed many times by my brothers, px'd for almera

Almera GX, bought as my mums car, ragged by my brothers. My brother crashed it 4 weeks old at 100mph into a round about. He was fine, car was repaired although later found out which shold of been written off. 150k on the clock it was sold on ebay for spares or repairs. It was stolen the night it was bought from us and ended up in ireland.

Toyota Carina E - Mile muncher. Covered 180k and sold to a buy in Bedford as a taxi.

Toyota Camry V6 - Bought with 11k on clock, sold with 240k and sent to Africa for its gearbox.

Toyota Corrola - Bought new, gearbox blew up at 40k randomly. Sold due to lack of use.

Audi A8 - Lovely car, clocked up 120k and has a few issues. Sold to me last month.

Toyota Camry V6, Gem 60k car for £1400. Temp run around until the right S8 comes up at the right price - (current)
