Turbo Diesel Stalling

Recommended Posts

Dover

Hi all, im not sure if this is allowed but my friends 306 '98 phase 2 turbo diesel keeps stalling. It starts ok first time but dies within a few seconds. My firend has been running it on european truck diesel so i dont know if that is an issue? but i have checked a few things and there is diesel getting to the injectors, but i dont know much about these cars, if anyone could give me a few pointers of things to look at or know of anythings that these engines had trouble with i would be grateful. Its got the lucas pump on it

Thanks for the reply, would i be looking for leaks before or after the pump? the clear tube from the filter to the pump does not have any bubbles in it, but the primer pump does go a little soft after each start

Test the alternator see if its above 14v.

My 1.8 diesel kept cutting out due to low voltage, if it goes below 12v pump solenoid shuts cutting the diesel.

Could be worth changing the solenoid for a known working one.

i thought it could have been the stop solenoid as when i owed the car the immobiliser would sometimes cut it out, so because of this i removed the solenoid and took out the guts of it to prove this wsant an issue so in theory it should not be possible to shut off flow with this solenoid anymore

Have changed the pump timing by advancing/retarding it recently?

Enough diesel in it?

Nah, it sat for around a week while we where all on holiday, and yes my friend is a lady and at the risk of sounding sexist, 1st thing i checked was fuel level, then fuel type :P

Perished fuel pipes wil cause an air leak & stop the engine running but I wouldn't expect that on a 98 306.

How well does it start?

As mentioned by Welshpug above, air leaks will stop the engine & the priming bulbs are known to fail letting air in, try giving the priming bulb a squueze to see if its solid or not when it stalls.

Right, thanks for all the replies. I replaced all the fuel lines into the filter ie bulb.., and all the return pipes like line from the pump to tank, and the ones in between the injectors. When i started it this this time, same problem, but i seen bubbles in the clear line going into the pump. i replaced the filter also, and after i seen the bubbles i sealed it with sealant also. Tried bypassing the filter housing, same problem. I even got an old bottle and plumbed in a line to give it a soid line of fuel and still the same problem, its really getting on my nerves now.

Just for info aswell, all the lines and bulb etc are genuine peugeot. Also i did find the breather line from the intercooler to the pump did have quite a lot of oil in it, but that has now been drained

Also forgot to say, it starts 1st time everytime, and yes the bulb does go soft after it has ran.

Going back a few years now but I remember my mate who's a mechanic having a D Turbo in with similar issues. Took about 3 long evenings of us changing near everything but in the end it was sticking a different pump on it that did the trick. Might be worth a try.
