Idling Issues

For the lifr of me, I can't get my 1.9 Gti to run at any sort of consistent or normal idling speed. I have recently had a head gasket failure but having replaced it and put all back together again, I now start at 3000+ revs and after a bit of use, it settles down to around 2000 plus. It roars during gear changes and has the hiccups when decelerating and changing down the gears. I'm guessing I'm either getting too much air or too much fuel and not having any serious mechanical knowledge, I don't know where to go now. Should I source a replacement throttle body with the original settings or does anyone have any better suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

start with the obvious, any air leaks? throttle cable not too tight?

then get a haynes workshop manual and work through the injection system section, theres a copy in m@tt s signature, you can get them quite well setup without specialist tools.

Cheers WP. I have two versions of the Haynes manual (one printed from here and one given to me by a mechanic friend). One seems to be an updated version of the other. Bank holiday tomorrow so time to play around with it, I suppose.

Is the bolt used to attach the oil filler to inlet manifold present? If not, you'll be getting unmetered air entering the inlet.

Replacement bolt is in Dino - but yeah I have thought about that one as it was also disconnected during the head gasket refit. I might revisit with with an extra washer to help seal. Oil filler is swinging around loose at the mo tbh.

There's the coolant and SAD pipes under the manifold too. I'd be going at it with a tin of carb cleaner to see if there is any unseen leaks. Then you can rule that out too.

Have you taken the dizzy of or timed it up correctly?
