Driveshaft Intermediate Bearing

Recommended Posts

2052006

Got a nasty screaching/whirring sound coming from what I thought was the o/s/f area, definitely not engine or brakes related, so my initial thoughts were wheel bearing. However, having got the front of the car up in the air this morning, there is an odd noise (read screeching/squeaking) coming from the intermediate driveshaft bearing area when turning the shaft. A bit of WD40 has quietened it down, but I'm sure will dry up very quickly or, more likely, make no difference under load.

Is it common for these bearings to fail? And are they replaceable? It is only 2 yrs old and is a GKN one which I thought was meant to be ok

If it's new driveshaft time, where's best, GSF again?

Edited to add: There also appears to be a tiny bit (ie 1mm or less) of lateral movement of the internediate bearing. I've checked the "hockey stick" bolts are nice and tight too. Should it move at all?

yes the bearing is replaceable not sure if pug still do them but any good bearing supplier should be able to get one for you if you get them the numbers off it.

How does the bearing come off?

Hammer/chisel/grinder.

You will need a press and a long length of suitable dia tube to press on the new one.

Anyone got any idea where I can get one of these bearings from? Checked service box and not listed.

Local motor factors are able to ring their bearing supplier and order you a new one using the numbers stamped on the old one :)

They are listed: 205 > Transmission > Driveshafts > first entry.

Part number 3247 03, £24.72, which is expensive for what it is. It lists the specs as 30x55x13 (ID x OD x thickness), so a bearing supplier should be able to get one a lot cheaper.

as Ryan said, it is listed but can be sourced elsewhere quite easily, just find a bearing supplier and give them the dimensions.

cant remember the code offhand but i remember looking on ebay and finding them for a few pounds, a branded one off the shelf i doubt would be much more than a tenner

6006ZZ is what you want from those dimensions. Do not be tempted to buy the cheapest that you can find. All bearings are not created equal. Stick to a known make such as SKF or Timken.

Would the above be correct then? Or is this something completely different?!

The OE bearing number on a 306 hdi is 6006rk8c3, im not sure if its exactly the same for the 205 or not.

However i bought a 6006 2RS C3 bearing to replace it with (Double Rubber Shield) and C3 (Allows extra tollerance due to heat expansion) as £24 for the OE was taking the biscuit, compared to £7 from a bearing supplier.

So, I've got a new bearing (SKF). However, next problem is that holding the old bearing on is a "heat shrunk collar" (that's what the mech at my local garage calls it). How does this come off and can it be reused? If not, where can I get a new one from? Bloke at garage understandably doesn't want to start messing with it until we know whether it can be replaced if needs be.

Any ideas, need this sorted asap, as am 205-less at the moment!

Think I may have found this "collar" - number 5 on the service box diagram. Spoken to Tewkesbury Pug who were very helpful and I *think* this is the right part. Can anyone with knowledge or experience confirm this?

You probably spoke to Ed if it was Warners, really good guy :)

the part in question is listed;

3248 08 DRIV SHAFT BUSH, £8.10

Still used on shafts to this day so should be available, no guarantees how long it'll take as I doubt many dealerships will have one in stock.

The collar and bearing came off on my shaft, was during a down shift.

Came off pretty easy so don't think its a heat shrunk collar.

The collar came off mine when I pressed the bearing off, so I reused it. It's not super-tight, it's just to hold the bearing in place.

WP - thanks - I think you're right. I was getting confused with the service box diagram - it looks like it's back to front - so what I (and Ed at the parts dept) thought was the collar (or the bush) is actually something else (described as a "defelector", whatever that is? Some sort of seal??). I've changed the order to the bush anyway - hopefully this is the right one.

I'm hoping this won't end up being a case of should have just bought a whole new driveshaft in the first place. I am loath to do that, as I suspect the reason why the bearing has failed is because it's crap - it just says "poland" on it - probably not a decent one like SKF.

Anyway, we'll see if it turns up tomorrow AM.

Most bearings will come from Poland or somewhere similar these days, most of the Timken o.e bearigns are from Poland, as are quite a few of the SKF items though sopme are still french or german made afaik.

I do see your logic in going down this route as it seems to be more difficult to source decent units so if you can do the work yoursel for get it done at a fair price it's worth it as they do last.

Picked up the collar from Pug this morning. The old one chiseled off easily, new one was heated up by the garage next door and seems to have gone on fine. Test driven and seems to have sorted it - fingers crossed. Thanks for all the help :)
