Drive Shaft Overhaul. Peice Missing?

Recommended Posts

mhyphenl

I'm renovating a pair of ABS drive shafts and have met a couple of issues. The hub ends seem to differ internally, on the exterior there are the splines for the ABS sensor but on the inside they seem to have used a different ball bearing arrangement and the shaft itself is just splined and held in place with a spring clip which must push through then spring out to lock the shaft in place. On one side the shaft is locked in. On the other the spring clip has snapped and the shaft just pulls out. Where on earth could I get a new one from??

Also, with the shorter shaft on the gearbox side, in the joint there is a spring which pushes outwards to keep the shaft expanded into place. Should there be the same on the longer one?

they sound like the 1.9 shafts where the outer joint is knock on type like on 405's etc.

the spring clips normally come with the boot kit, they always used to when i worked at pug but i suppose it depends on make of boot kit?

as for the spring in joint on my 1.6 shafts the one has got a spring the other has not, canot remember if they are both supposed to have them or not.

Thanks for mentioning 405's. You were exactly right, its the snap ring that holds it in place, about 20p from Pug :) the construction of my drive shafts are identical to the 405 1.9 8v.

As for the springs, it seems to me that most people don't seem to have one in the drivers side inner joint, however the construction in the joint is identical and in terms of working conditions a small amount of outward pressure seems to make sense keeping the system under a small amount of tension so I'm going to put one in both sides. That is unless someone really knows a reason not to!
