My 1.9 Wont Start Once The Engine Is Hot

Recommended Posts

Ok, as topic states my 1.9 will start fine when cold, or not up to normal temperature. But once it gets hot, it does not start. I can hear a loud click like the pinion gear is activated (but maybe it's just the solenoid I'm hearing?) but the engine doesn't turn over. I've assumed it's the starter motor and was considering trying to put some kind of heat shield between the block and the starter motor. But I've begun wondering if there are other common sources of this problem in XU engines that I should investigate (such as fuel lines or fuel rails or something).

check how many volts you get down the solenoid switching wire, this wire often causes issues like this, as well as poor connections through a multiplug that sits under the AFM on most P1.5 cars.

best to replace it with fresh wire regardles really, it could be the starter, but always worth doing the cheap fix first.

Should've mentioned that I've got a relay wired in so that the solenoid is getting a full 12V. I've swapped the relay with a new one, but still getting the same problem.

The relay was added when I was getting the 'click-click-click-start' problem with the original large body starter motor, which was since changed with a used small body one.
