Radiator Fan Runs Constantly

Recommended Posts

nzpug

hi everyone,

my 1.9 has recently started to run the radiator fan constantly, from when the car comes up to temperature and doesn't stop when the ignition is off (even if it is not hot when the engine is turned off). I came to realise this when it ran all night and completely flattened my battery...

the fans come on when it gets to 'normal running temperature' (about a third from the left of the temp dial) and just keep running. so now I unplug the fan switch when it is parked up.

does this sound like my radiator temperature sensor is faulty? is it usual for the fans to run continuously when when sensor fails?

cheers,

Matt

I would agree it sounds like a faulty thermoswitch that once closed sticks until the coolant has cooled much further than it normally would need to. This is backed up by the fact that it operates normally until its up to temp and the switch closes.

You could check by putting a multimeter across the terminals when it should in theory be open and check resistance across the switch, but to be honest it can pretty much only be the switch thats the problem I think.

It is normal for the fan to run with the ignition switched off on a 205.

Certainly sounds like your thermoswitch is broken, I would replace this first before doing anything else.

However, one caveat, is your car fitted with air-con, if so the cooling fan control is different.
