Body Shop Recommendations And Colour Match Worries

Recommended Posts

205_sunderland

Ive been to 2 bodyshops to get quotes on my gti and they have both said they dont want the job due to colour match issues. one rear quarter looks like its had a reaction under the lacquer so appears all scratched and i want it perfect thus why i want it done and the little blemishes around the rear quarters at the bottom sill join are being done aswell as the front and back bumper.

The other quarter has a very tiny dint but i want the car mint as its the cleanest gti ive seen for a very very long time but im quite suprised so many body shops wont do it due to the fact its red, ive booked it in a garage i used to use but the guy who was the painter has bunked off, his sons doing all the work alone and im not sure of the set-up as ve seen non of his work at all....so any ideas

to be honest i can see why they dont want the work, pug red is notorious for fading my cherry red is more orange these days. If they did a few repairs using some fresh cherry it would look like a dogs dinner in my opinion you would have nice bright red and then 20 odd year old faded. As a customer you would probably not be happy with it hence the reason why body shops are being blunt with you about the matching. red can be quite difficult to match on newer cars let alone old ones like 205's.

2 choices the way i see it

1 leave well alone and live with the imperfections

2 complete respray.

just my 2 pence worth as i am in similar situation with my cherry red and have decided once mechanicals are done it is getting a new coat of paint.

Complete respray and don't go for the cheapest one imo or you'll be re-doing it again in a few years [personal experience]. Red is a nightmare to match and with it being an older car as well bodyshops will probably be thinking what other things are hiding under the paint and thus hard to price a job accurately.

ive had decent prices just people saying the job will only be as good as the lad who mixed the paint, mine isnt really that faded to be fair but i know red a hard colour, i cant afford a full shoot and only wanted the little bits of surface rust doing and the shell is mint except for few tiny marks so full respray would be overkill, its really fcuking annyoing how so many places and reluctant to touch it but i know there is a classic car specialist ive been recommended to try in town. Seems the british trade is dying in all aspects as all the painters even want easy jobs only now aswell, i know a guy who would full shoot the car for 300 quid probably if i stripped it all myself and did all prep, he did my scirocco but it came back to me with an out the gun finish so id have to machine polish it etc myself is it worth it you think?

and also could i get a kit to refit all trims and bumpers for £50 quid as that my budget

cheers mick

I'd leave well alone to be honest mate..especially now you've mentioned your budget. I've had experiences with bodyshops and I'll never scrimp on cost again when it comes to repaints. £300 is too cheap whether you know him or not. If you cant afford a full repaint from a good bodyshop with proof of similar work I'd leave well alone and learn to live with these tiny problems your car has. Treat the rust and touch up the paint is what I'd do.

Good luck mate ;)

The lad i got the car off said hell do it and they restore gti's at the yard he works at, so im taking it down to see him, but he thinks he would have to get tinted paint to do it right so ill have a think about it and see, the lad in the shop really loves my car anyway so wants to make it look mint again and said if i wait till october when all his works out the way hell do it for me and take his time to do a real good job...what you think?

If I am 100% honest, I don't think you will be pleased with what result you will get. I can see you upping your budget to get it done, and never be happy with it. I would be the same.

Pay the big money for a full respray, or live with it as it is and keep the money.

It may not look faded, but put it next to brand new deep paint and the difference will be night and day.

for £300 i wouldnt get it done,if its as clean as you say it is he might f*** the paint up completly,at the place i work we have a machine called Automatchic we call it the brick but what it is its like a camera and it takes a picture of the paint on your car and gives us a formula to mix up that colour now sometimes its not 100% but on solid colours like reds it usely gives an very good match.try finding out if theres a bodyshop near you with one

For a Cherry rear quarter I would recommend getting a colour match from both the top and bottom of the panel.... rate of fade seems to vary greatly- a match at the top to blend in ( has to happen somewhere on the 205) may well seem orange when compared to the bottom of the door.

Other issue is that whilst it might match well now, I'd be doubtful that it would in a few years as the different paints are likely to fade at different rates - certainly I've seen red cars where they've obviously had a panel sprayed previously, and that panel has subsequently faded far worse than the original paint.

If you go for a full respray you won't regret it. This is my cherry red a month ago after having a full respray.

i might just grind the surface rust of the arch to sill joins myself and save up for a full shoot, ill be able to get one for 400 quid easy as ill strip all the car myself and remove front and back windows so its a bang on job, 300 quid is alot to pay for bodywork in my eyes as i know lads who paint so never pay top money anyway, one side had a bubble the size of a 5p and the other just has paint flaking where quarter curls over into the arch from stone chips over time so ill leave the bubble side as its not rotten at all, you can push it as hard as you like and its not soft, and ill grind the surface rust off where paint it off and touch in for now.

There is a part of me that would love to whip the engine out aswell next year and paint under the bonnet too all in one go.

No offence, but for 3-400 quid for a paint job I doubt it will be good and last well for years. Being in the motor trade all my life and having a good friend with a bodyshop I couldn't even get a full paint job for that price! And thats with me having 6 cars in with him over the last 3-4 years. It is at least 2k for a full job over here in N.Ireland anyhow with proper good quality paint e.g ICI. We also have a car done by the same person from 1993 and nothing has 'come through' yet on that car after that amount of time.

wow 2k is mega money for a spray job, 800 quid over here is top money round my way, my cars mint to start with so there wouldnt be much prep at all so i could go to a coach works and pay top price and it would come with a guarantee and that would only be 1k tops.

Theres a local lad round here who works for quite a large bodyshop company and has build a paint booth in his back garden (converted a double garage with extractors etc) who charges 400 a respray and he did my m8s mk2 golf and the jobs he does are amazing, he did a full bumper off and window out respray on it and it was unreal, looked like it was just out the factory.

I saw it fresh after paint and there wasnt a ripple in sight whole body was straight as new and he did do alot of carpark dint repairs on it. Ive never used him though as environmental health keep trying to shut him down and turning up so all the cars have to be hidden

i got everything together to do a full shoot on my car before and that was the best possible primer, stopper, bodge the lot all purchased for me by the bodyshop my friend worked for who were very very good and do all the Aston-martins, Ferrari's, jags and nice cars in the prestige garage near me it was £250 quid minus paper and mask etc so it really doesnt cost 1000s unless your painting a dog than needs alot of work
