Gti-6 Oil/water

Recommended Posts

miamibungers

Chaps, the oil in my GTI-6 engine'd 205 gets very hot under normal to fast driving (1 to 2 notches from the red), however my water never really gets that hot (certainly runs cooler than my standard 1.9).

It has a standard rad & standard '6 oil/water heat exchanger btw.

In my head when the oil gets hot the water temp should raise, then the oil cools, right?

What do you think could be the issue?

How have you plumbed in the heat exchanger - did you use the a 309 GTi top rad pipe or similar?

The standard 205 radiator doesn't have the extra takeoff for the heat exchanger that the 306 rad does, and hence you can't use the standard 306 pipework / layout. Unless you've plumbed it in so that like in the original 306 installation it sees a sufficient amount of coolant flow to take away the excess heat, it will never work properly.

which oil temp sender are you using? the gti6 one is different to the 205 ones though specifically what the difference is I dont know apart from the max temperature theyre rated to (140 for the 205, 165 for the gti6)

Thanks for you speedy replies chaps

Anthony - I'm not with the car right now, I took a look late last night - I only managed to quickly trace one of the coolant pipes coming off the exchanger which is T-pieced into a coolant pipe on the bulkhead, not sure where the other one goes whithout double checking i'm afraid.

Welshpug - I'm not sure which oil temp sender it's got, I've not had the car long and didn't do the conversion myself. Are you thinking the oil temp is fine but is being incorrectly displayed? All of the other dials work so I'm presuming whoever did the conversion would've made sure its the correct one?

You can use either the 205 or 306 oil temp sensor - it doesn't really make much odds.

The 306 sensor just reads a touch lower on the gauge for a given oil temperature than the 205 sensor does.

I've been running a 306 sensor for for years now :)

Thats not good for me then (IF I have a 306 sender)! If its reading lower than it actually is then god knows what the temperature is like. I think I'm going to give the coolant system a flush as I've got a new header tank to go on anyway, plus I'll get the oil changed as I don't know when it was last done.

I've got a picture which I'm going to upload in a short while to show where the pipe is t-pieced into - I believe its one of the pipes which go through the bulkhead into the heater matrix??
