Gearbox Oil

Recommended Posts

arwel

Hi people. My current BE3 box is finally on its way out. It's always crunched in 3rd and 4th since we've had it but now after a few road rallies its even worse and now starting to whine and I'm pretty sure the diff has had enough too.

Anyway, I have another BE3 box ready to go in but i need to flush it and pop some new oil in it. What is the best gearbox oil to put in it? I tried searching on here but cant find anything.

Cheers

Arwel

The synchros don't work properly with anything else.

Well, I beg to differ on that one. There are plenty of suitable choices for the BE box, there is no one oil. The Total BV is not unique...

Esso used to do the oil a few years ago as did shell, total seems to be the one to use nowadays.

they might all be the same "75w80" spec but the generic ones dont seem to do the trick.

With all due respect of course you disagree :lol:

The experience of a lot of people on this forum including myself suggests Total BV is the only stuff to use.

It is also the manufacturer's recommended oil therefore what they were filled with in the factory and at all subsequent services at Peugeot dealers.

And the real killer here is that Peugeot dealers sell the stuff from stock for £6.57 so its also cheaper than anything you sell.

Until very recently (i.e. 3 months) the 2 litre bottles of 75w80 from dealers (part # 973641) were Esso manufactured. Only the 1 litre bottles were Total BV. Although now that has changed and the new 2 litre bottles (part # 9730A2) are Total aswell. Yes, this is pointless information, but it does show that not only Total did the right stuff....til recently at the very least!

Comma also do the correct grade gearoil;

Comma EP75w80

I've been running it in my Pugs for the last few years without issue.

I thought Esso and Comma were one and the same.
