Love My Gti But Now Its Time For A Turbo...

Recommended Posts

Hi all, Loving my 205 1.9GTI its onyx black and great fun to drive. Only thing I could ask is a few more horses at my right foot ;-) with this in mind I`ve just offered to buy (havent heard back yet) a 2'0l 8v turbo from a citreon xm off the sale threads in the forum :-)

Im hoping for 200BHP minimum out of it and wat to keep it completely std apart from this and maybe a full stainless decat exhaust. A real street sleeper. Im resonably handy with a socket set and am pretty good and learning as I go along BUT...

Does anyone have any pointers that might be of use?

Best gearbox to use? Can I get an LSD for it? Is it even worth having an LSD?

Obviously Ill be scouring the engine conversion threads and using the search function a fair bit but any major points to look out for would be a big help and give me somewhere to start.

Ill obviously get my own thread going when work begins. for you all to chuckle at my efforts.

James

Why are you hoping for 200 BHP?

Perhaps a better phrase would be Aiming for a minimum of 200BHP

When ive decided on the box I need/be best Ill look into the best LSD for it. Id like t get it all done before fitting the engine so I dont have to sod around doing to with the engine in situe. Im actually really exited to get started. Gonna tear down my garage and put up a lean to/ca port to give me loads more room to work.

The original gearbox in your 1.9 will be ideal as long as there is nothing wrong with it?

Also, as has been said, you definitely want an LSD. As well as the improved traction it also replaces the weakest point in the gearbox.

Yea my gearbox seems OK, Ill keep an eye out for an LSD and also probably service refurb the box whilst its out.

Any recommendations on an LSD? I`ll be trying to acquire a used one as I dont want to break the bank on this build. As we all know almost any money spent on a 205 over standard is like wasted money if you ever come to resell! Although to be honest I don't think id ever sell mine. Best fun you can have for around 2k, also insurance is cheaper than 6 months tax!

if its that engine for £150 then it sounds like a bargain.

you need to make sure the ECU is unlocked too.

If i were buying that engine, I would do a semi rebuild on it (at the very least a new headgasket, cambelt and water pump) as soon as you go chasing ponies through a tired or worn engine, things go poop.

I would also be tempted into checkign the bearings for any wear. from reading on here, the blocks suffer badly from bore wear too :(

The diff would be one of the last items you should worry about at the moment! Get it in, running and make sure you're happy first :)

Yes its that engine, hopefully arranging to get it at the weekend, when I hear back from the guy again.

A partial rebuild is on the cards. An uprated headgasket its top of the bill!
